Jokes My Father Never Taught Me: Life, Love, and Loss with Richard Pryor Review

Jokes My Father Never Taught Me: Life, Love, and Loss with Richard Pryor
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I can't remember the last book I read that made me laugh as well as cry. This is a good'un: a must have for any Richard Pryor fan. And if you weren't a Rain Pryor fan before, you will be after reading this. I am proud of Rain and she should be proud of herself. She really did her thing on this one. She didn't hold back, she let it all out. This book is not sugar-coated at all. She's brutally honest just like her dad.
This book was so moving to me because I can relate to Rain in several different ways. My father was also abusive. My father abused alcohol and drugs and went on violent rampages. My father also believed that money was equivalent to an apology or an expression of love. Rain recalled that a good solid hug would have been much better than a new car. I can definitely relate to that. My father also ended up wheel-chair bound and died from a debilitating disease (Parkinson's). It's not easy watching someone you love deteriorate like that no matter how bad of a parent they were. And like Rain, no matter what my father did, I still loved him very much.
I know Richard is looking down on her beaming with pride. While he never recovered from his troubled childhood, she did. And she did it with grace and a forgiving spirit. Bless her heart, with two unstable parents, it's amazing what's she's done with her life. Though she dabbled with alcohol and drugs, she never became an addict. She was also blessed to find a good husband unlike many daughters of abusive fathers. Hats off to you Rain!
This book is definitely a page-turner, as a matter of fact, I didn't put it down once I started reading it. I read the whole thing in one sitting. An easy read, this book is also filled with some really nice photos. And the photos are not only in the middle of the book, they're placed here and there throughout the book which is very nice. There's a touching photo of Rain and her father taking a nap together. She looks just like her dad and she's funny just like him too.
This book also revealed Jennifer Lee's true colors. Jennifer was Richard's last wife, wife #5 and wife#7. I was convinced she really loved Richard, had forgiven him for the way he'd treated her and wanted to take care of him in his time of need. That would explain her marrying him when he was wheel-chair bound, nearly in a vegetative state and dependent on her for his survival, right? WRONG! She had dollar signs written all over her. I once admired her for trying to keep some dollars coming in for Richard. She helped to get his TV show released on DVD, she helped put together his 9 CD box set and she also appeared on his Comedy Central Special, "I Ain't Dead Yet." But I guess I didn't stop to think that by being his wife/caretaker, she got to cash some chips in too for herself. She did a good job handling Richard's business affairs but she was wrong for keeping him away from his children. She also had him change his will shortly before he died which left the bulk of his estate to her. Now I'm not saying she shouldn't have gotten anything, but she shouldn't get everything. Richard's daughter Elizabeth is contesting this in court. I hope she wins. Shame on you Jennifer.
If you're a fan of Richard or Rain, you won't be disappointed with this one. Rain has a beautiful spirit and like her father, she has a special way of touching people with her words. You go Rain!

I don't watch a lot of zombie movies, but i love a good zombie book. I originally purchased the Kindle version and I ended up liking the book so much that it needed to be added to my collection.
The only down side to the book in my opinion was the way some detail was just kind of brushed over, or moved along a little too quickly. Just a little more info/detail on the fighting parts might have helped. Other than that I loved the story. Mr. Hallard stayed very true to the idea of zombies, going into the more horrifying side of zombies that some books have stayed clear of. This helped make the story more realistic, more possible. I am very much looking forward to the second book!

Primetime Blues: African Americans on Network Television Review

Although I initially intended on simply reviewing Bogle's masterwork, I feel that along with a personal reflection on the book, it is necessary to contradict statements made by an earlier reviewer.
Yes, the book is "exhaustive" but never is it boring. Every profile of African-American actors on the tube is carefully detailed and extensively covered, with little asides that make for intriguing reading. To this reader, it is clear that Bogle feels that there have been significant improvements in the representation of Blacks on television, but there are still some significant inroads, in front of and behind the camera, that need to be made. By covering as thoroughly as he has the entirety of those African-American pioneers and trendsetters, the author satisfies those that have longed to see such a mammoth undertaking published.
I, for one, savor the profiles of such underrated performers as Rosalind Cash, Joe Morton, Shirley Hemphill, Juano Hernandez, James Edwards, and a slew of others that labored with many less-than-distinguished parts and managed to create something memorable. It is further refreshing to see the author give the backgrounds of the more familiar African-American superstars like Bill Cosby, Cicely Tyson, and Diahann Carroll.
While I do not particularly care for the programs that have a "monochromatic cast" (Friends, Martin, and the various UPN "black-block" shows), I understand and appreciate Bogle's belief that television shows have a responsibility to inform and present a realistic portrayal of society, be that program a sitcom or a drama.
It is true that television is primarily entertainment; however, in that entertainment, thought-provoking writing and occasional commentary on society is warranted. That is one of Bogle's premises that he eloquently expresses.
This is a top-notch historical/editorial reference that makes for great reading and a worthwhile addition to the library of any fan of the "boob tube."

I have read this book twice, have given several copies as gifts, and hear myself quoting from it on occasion. It's amazing how the success stories of others can inspire us to realize our own dreams. This is a perfect gift for graduates, Mother's Day and Father's Day, and award presentations for any business-minded person. I especially like the practical lessons that Mr. Elliott draws from the real-life experiences of people like Walt Disney, Bill Gates, Andy Griffith, Mary Kay, and Martin Luther King, Jr. We all need heros and role models like these.

This book had me more informed than some of the New Yorkers I spoke with during my trip. While on one of the double-decker tour buses, I was able to follow along with the easy to read map included with the book and garnered information about various sites that the tour guide did not even address!
The information about prices, hours of operation, hotels, and necessities was accurate and much appreciated by our group. My friends joked about my preparedness, but no one was sorry when we always knew where we were going, what it would cost to enter and how long we could stay. The tips about avoiding lines and how to get better deals were also very much appreciated!

Television Game Show Hosts: Biographies of 32 Stars Review

Television Game Show Hosts: Biographies of 32 Stars
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This book has been out for well over a year. Hard to believe I'm the first to review it. Maybe it's because a lot of people find the price to be expensive, it is a hard cover book. Anyway, true to the advertisement, 32 hosts are covered in the book, past and present. Die hard game show fans of the 60s thru the 90s will not be dissapointed. Bob Barker, Regis Philbin, Alex Trebek, Gene Rayburn, Bill Cullen, Allen Ludden, Monty Hall and more are in here. Each host gets his own chapter. The good and the bad are discussed, so Barker's lawsuits are covered, though most of that info is what you probably know already. Early hosts like Bud Collyer, John Charles Daly and Garry Moore also are mentioned. Their starts, other jobs and for the ones still alive, a bit of their personal lives are discussed. The author did a good research job and I don't believe I found any glaring errors, and I'm a big fan of most game show hosts.
The cutoff point for the host era seems to be the late 80s, so recent hosts like Howie Mandel, Jeff Foxworthy and Drew Carey are NOT covered. But there are some good insights from most of the hosts, like what Monty Hall really thought of his version of "Beat the Clock" and Geoff Edwards telling how the "Treasure Hunt" crew searched the area around the studio for a stolen car that was supposed to be a prize on the show - like a Cadillac or Rolls Royce.
Beware, this is a book you'll probably have to place an order with at a bookstore and pay up front. But if you want to know a little more about the hosts and the game shows they hosted - it's probably worth the price. Amazon.com does have it - that's how I got it.

George Carlin's Alter-Ego by His Alter-Ego Review

George Carlin's Alter-Ego by His Alter-Ego
Average Reviews:

Not only was the author and alter-ego Bill Brennan one of my father's best friends, he was at various times his boss, his customer, his tenant, his perfect host, his best drinking buddy, his greatest confidant and his biggest fan. My father was not George Carlin, but since I have observed Mr. Brennan in the above roles many times, I found his book George Carlin's Alter-Ego by His Alter-Ego to be one of the best reads I have ever enjoyed. I first met Bill in 1958 when I was 6 years old at the original Dayton (Ohio) Racquet Club, where he the owner/proprietor, and my parents were members. Since I was too young to "get" Carlin, much less get to see his show, I never had the pleasure of meeting him. But he was a great hit there and everywhere else I know. From my intimate knowledge of Brennan, I found many of these stories to be refreshing and further affirmation of Carlin the comedy legend. The anecdotal nature of this book makes it an easy and enjoyable read, with the stories and further insights sealing the legacy of George Carlin as one of the greatest philosophers of modern American storytelling. The genius of Bill Brennan is he packages the same Carlinesque delivery into a man behind the lens view of George the man, making him even more genuine than any of us fans ever knew. Two Thumbs and Two single digits up to this book. You may well laugh 'til you wet yourself, but you are advised to do so in the privacy of your own bathroom.

Selective Memory, Amnesia, Alzheimer's; call it what you will.
Some unknown person ordered and mailed a free copy to me, and it arrived yesterday
The person must have seen my name, picture, and comments on the New York Times' City Room site, or looked me up on UTube, Google, and MSN Search.
I thought that was very thoughtful of him, and wish to thank him for thinking of me.
However, I'm involved in writing my own book about my volunteering for the Central Park Police, and the strangler, stabber, and serial killer of Gays, among others that I personally dealt with, and turned over to the Manhattan North Homicide Detectives/Police
In years to come when things quiet down somewhat in my life I'll then have the time to glance through this personel reminiscence on Mr. Vermilye's part.

Built to resemble an old New England barn, the Boothbay Playhouse operated from 1937 to 1974, under two separate managements, as a professional summer theatre. In the old-resident-company tradition, a different play was presented each week from June to September- and at prices that seem unbelievable today. But even then the challenge of filling seats was a perennial uphill battle that led to ongoing financial crunches for both managements until surmounting losses forced its closure. This is the story of that landmark theatre's trials, triumphs and tribulations, told by someone who was there for five of those 37 years. Illustrated with 60 photos, the volume also features casts and credits for all Playhouse productions

I have looked at SEVERAL Toronto guidebooks and I just couldn't find one that I liked...until I picked up this book (and bought it) It was both thorough and concise, skipping the long narratives and in depth history that you find in so many other books.
This book even includes post-it flags to mark your favorite pages. (I can't believe no one else ever thought of that!) It was a very nice and useful touch!
If you plan on spending some time in Toronto (and day tripping here and there in the surrounding areas i.e. Niagara Falls etc.) this is the only guidebook you will need!

Lonely Planet the Netherlands (Lonely Planet Travel Guides) Review

Lonely Planet the Netherlands (Lonely Planet Travel Guides)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
General background -
================
The Lonely Planet Guides contain a lot of information. They are supposed to be of help to the common backpacker. However, due to the extensive coverage they offer about the countries they discuss, they can also be a very good source of information to travelers with greater means that are interested in a thorough coverage of their destination. Moreover, they can be of use to persons that are interested in learning about the country as a starting point for further studies.
When the reader wishes to travel he has two options of dealing with the wide-ranging material:
1. To read the book almost cover to cover in advance, aiming at planning the trip down to the last small detail while learning a lot about the country - culture, history, climate, geography, conduct and so forth.
2. To read the essential highlights from the book using the contents - in a relatively short time - aiming at learning the basic information needed for getting a good head start (forget about the long "facts About" chapter). Upon getting there it is easy to use the guide on a daily basis for further information.
The guide -
========
This guide is a very good one with one major flaw that can't be disregarded: the prices are given in Guilders, more than a year (!) after the country has completely converted to Euros, since the edition hasn't been updated since the 1st of January 2001. That fact poses a great difficulty at planning the budget for the trip (add to that the considerable rise of prices since the transition to the Euro). This is a serious letdown and not something you would expect from a distinguished publication house. Hopefully they will release a second edition soon.
Aside from the problem mentioned above, the guide is a real help for the traveler; the information and recommendations in the different sections were most helpful and the proved accurate. A good example is the emphasis that is given to a certain rental bike service at Amsterdam that offers no advertising for itself on the bicycle, and keeps many preying eyes away from the bike. The pictures presented inside are well taken and offer a beautiful glance at what the reader might see during his journey. The guide contains the wide assortment of maps of many important and interesting towns and cities the reader might visit with the familiar marking of the recommended places to see/eat/sleep.
I would like to point out that not all the best places to visit are pointed out in the book. I reckon they can't put everything inside and they should and do promote self-exploration. I walked around for hours in each and every place I've visited and was rejoiced to find buildings and corners that were breathtaking - on my own. I recommend you to do the same as in some cases - owning to the desire to stay compact and still comprehensive - the book provides rough guidelines that are superficial and personal opinions that might not always suit your taste.
The chapters about the Netherlands in general and the special boxed texts scattered throughout the book are very interesting and are best read during the trip to answer questions that may pop up. By and large, one will have time for that only once he is home and has the special interest in the country he has just visited.
Amsterdam-
-------------
The Amsterdam chapter may be the most important to the common traveler, simply because there is so much to see and do there. The guide offers good and detailed maps of the city, but too bad they are divided to small maps that are made to fit into the book like regular pages, rather than giving the readers a folded map they would be able to take out for their own convenience. That leaves no choice but to buy a map at the local shops, a reality Lonely Planet can change in the next edition.
As to the content itself, it's a mixed bag. They do provide top-notch info but also tend to exaggerate sometimes in describing places up to a tiresome point. The pages about the transportation possibilities are thorough. In the end of the day, it is more than enough and you wouldn't need the Lonely Planet's Amsterdam guide if you don't plan to live there more than a week or two.
Final note -
========
The Netherlands is a strikingly beautiful country. The cities as well as the countryside are absolutely dazzling, and the people are friendly and helpful. I enjoyed traveling in the land so much that I consider it the peak of my long trip that had been mainly to the countries of South East Asia. This guide contributed a lot to the general feeling I got thanks to all its good graces.

Big Wheel at the Cracker Factory Review

Big Wheel at the Cracker Factory
Average Reviews:

Technically a memoir, but also a look at jobs, decisions, dreams, influences and how to find meaning. The period this book covers is approximately 2000-2002, where Mickey finds himself in his post-college days with part-time teaching jobs, but also random gigs as an ice cream truck driver, stand-up comedian, and arcade attendant. He pokes fun at the colleges he works at, just as he does the "ridiculous" jobs. He is caught between a job he almost seems afraid to care about and those that amuse him. For our generation, and I am going to assume Mickey and I are almost exactly the same age, work has a different place in our lives. We know that bad things happen to good employees and that most people change jobs (and careers) repeatedly these days. We've watched jobs shipped overseas, fear layoffs, and seen how corporations have kept the minimum wage ridiculously low. We are a generation of cynics, but what happens when cynics find jobs with meaning? What happens when you find that you can't keep up the façade of youth and irresponsibility forever? The book is insightful, but also funny as hell. The scene where they are housesitting and a friend breaks the toilet tank in the middle of the night made me laugh out loud. Mickey has great comedic timing with a deadpan delivery. Highly recommended.

Movie critics review movies, we read reviews and we pick good movies. Sounds easy enough? Far from it! The problem is that critiquing a movie is subjective and there is no right answer. Not only that, but there are hundreds of movie critics all with different opinions.
So how exactly do you find a good movie? Well find a movie critic with similar tastes, that easy. Of course finding him or her is the problem. For me is James Berardinelli, there is no movie we go see without checking out JB's Rating. He is great; sharp writing, knowledgeable, funny but to the point, without being pretentious. I highly recommend him.
But since his website is free, why buy the book? Well for a couple of reasons:
1.Easier to browse: I hate the frames and the retro look of the website.
2.Easier to access: That way you can easily grab the book and check its review for movies on TV or On-Demand.
3.Tighter, Shorter Reviews: Which online sometimes go a bit too long.
For the record, I wasn't paid for the book review. I am just a thankful reader who has saved hundreds of dollars and thousands of hours thanks to James Berardinelli.

Planet Simpson: How a Cartoon Masterpiece Defined a Generation Review

Planet Simpson: How a Cartoon Masterpiece Defined a Generation
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
99% of the reviewers missed the point of the book. A book that promises a 'sprawling, multidimensional critical look' at "The Simpsons" as seen through the lens of pop culture analysis--what did they expect to read about? Most of them complain about the book's length and criticize the author's penchant for branching off into other pop culture topics. However, these two main complaints are both the central points of the book, and their arguments seem to be very defitions of "sprawling and multidemensional". I enjoyed this book very much, and liked the length of the it, as it meant the author did go in-depth in his analyses. While I did not necessarily agree with all of his points, he did present them very well and it is very obvious the man knows his "Simpsons." Furthermore, I did find many, but not all, of his "tangents" to be related and very applicable to the points he was trying to make using aspects of The Simpsons. As a long-time fan, I've always said that there is very little in life that "The Simpsons" doesn't relate to, so I really enjoyed this book. The reason I didn't give it a perfect is b/c I did find parts to be a bit dry for me, but that's the extent of my dislikes. My advice is this: if you want a more lighthearted read on "The Simpsons," buy one of the many other books about them--BUT if you want a much more in-depth and well-written book delivering what it promises, this is it.
