The Rough Guide to Europe On A Budget Review

The Rough Guide to Europe On A Budget
Average Reviews:

I travel to Europe a couple times a year for business -without a corporate budget! I needed a guide book that would help me find reasonable places to stay and the main sites to see in various European countries during my trips. (I rarely go to the same city twice.)
The Rough Guides are GREAT guide books. They are not for the backpacker crowd like Lonely Planet tends to be, nor the rich. Rough Guides cater to that middle crowd - me. Their single country or city guides go into great detail on each location. Don't miss these guidebooks if you are traveling extensively in one country. However, that's too much for my 2-3 day visits. That's where the "Rough Guide to Europe on a Budget" comes in.
The Guide covers 30 countries and appears to be an update of the The Rough Guide to Europe 2006 (Rough Guide Travel Guides). It gives a brief history, tips on culture, hotel and dining recommendations. It lists details on the top sightseeing sites. The photos and maps are better than many other publishers' single-country guide books. On my recent trips I found I was just as informed as my colleagues who invested (weight being a larger consideration than cost) in a single country guidebook.
"The Rough Guide to Europe on a Budget" has plenty of information for the business or limited time traveler. If you are going to spend a week in a country sightseeing upgrade to a single country guidebook.

I bought this book in preparation for a trip to San Francisco and it really helped me understand so much about the city, from the Gold Rush right up to the dotcom boom and crash. I especially liked the use of quotes from old sources that illustrate not just the past but the present as well. Overall, the book is very engaging and well written, I'd certainly recommend it for anyone seeking a deeper understanding of San Francisco than mainstream guide books provide.

The cover says "secrets of living the good life for less". This is a list of businesses with their addresses and phone numbers. There are no secrets. Her tip for getting a good price on hotel rooms is "before you go, set aside an hour and call 15 or 20 casinos". Seriously?
For free entertainment in Las Vegas she includes computer classes at one of the local Libraries.
This book was in the trash less than an hour after receiving it. I am now dumber for reading it, she receives no points and may god have mercy on her soul.

This was the 3rd "Rough Guide" I've used, and in my opinion they are the best resources for travel to new countries. They not only cover the "standard" areas and sites in detail - including a good range of lodging and dining options - but also take you off the beaten track, exposing nice gems not covered in other books.
If you like to really EXPLORE a country, rather than find the next good shopping area or find the most economical place to sleep, this book and ALL of the "Rough Guides" are for you!

Never Satisfied: How & Why Men Cheat Review

Never Satisfied: How and Why Men Cheat
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this book last year in my ongoing attempt to understand the workings of the male mind. As I read the stories of the men interviewed for this book, I couldn't help but wonder why these men chose to put so much time and effort into being trifling. They concocted some really elaborate schemes to cover up their chicks on the side. I mean really, wouldn't have just been easier to remain single and unattached?
I have seen Mr. Baisden in person and heard him on the radio, and he is a dynamic speaker.
I appreciated how this book examined infidelity from the perspective of the cheating male. That's not something I've seen in print before. It definitely gave me some things to thing about it.
I've loaned this book to a couple of friends and we've all had pretty similar reactions. Mr. Baisden may not be a formal social scientist, but I enjoyed reading his anecdotes and observations nontheless. Sometimes, authors can become so steeped in academia that they lose the common touch. While this book is not likely to garner any awards, it's a worthwhile read for women, like me, who sometimes wonder what makes men do the things that they do.

Italso takes a hard look at the role of the other woman as well as thetolerant wives and girlfriends. Never before has a book dealt withinfidelity on such a realistic level. The interviews are personal, revealing, engrossing, and sometimes astonishing. I was surprised to read Robin Williams still gets nervous. "Oh, totally", he says. Jason Alexander's most harrowing experience involved sleeping--yes, sleeping--on stage: "Lying on that bed, on that second story, on that Broadway stage--that combination literally scared me to death." There's more from Olympia Dukakis, Maya Angelou, Melissa Etheridge, David Brenner and others.

Moon Colorado (Moon Handbooks) Review

Moon Colorado (Moon Handbooks)
Average Reviews:

I was looking for a book that will take care of my summer trip to Colorado, and I did not find this book too helpful. It would have been more helpful if the book could highlight a few restaurants/hiking trails/points or shops worth visiting. It was my first time visiting Colorado, and it didn't mention anything about access road/trail closure in June.
If you didn't want to spend time doing extra search for your trip and just wanted to follow "the best" or "must visit" things on a guide book, this may not be adequate. Although it has good, general information on major cities and towns in Colorado, almost all of which you can find online. If you are looking for a guide book that has insider tips or detail information that make you say "I wish I had known", this book is probably not it.

Insiders' Guide to Cape Cod & the Islands, 8th (Insiders' Guide Series) Review

Insiders' Guide to Cape Cod and the Islands, 8th (Insiders' Guide Series)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I used to go to Cape Cod as a child, and always loved it. This summer I am taking my wife and kids there, and cannot wait. I've been using this guide as one of my primary resources for planning the trip (with a lot of TripAdvisor to supplement). So far, I've really enjoyed the book, and it's been exceedingly helpful. It is broken down into manageable and easy to understand sections. I particularly liked the history section, which described the history of the Cape and individual histories for each of the towns; and the activities section, which described all of the fun things to do. The description of the hiking and biking activities was particularly helpful for me and my family. There are decent maps at the beginning of the guide which are useful for planning, but not necessarily navigation. It is interesting to note that many of the restaurant recommendations you find in the book are not necessarily in the top listings for TripAdvisor. I recommend comparing notes between the book and that website for current reviews on both restaurants and hotels (of course, I'd recommend that for any travel destination). Overall, I am very pleased with the guide, and recommend it for anyone travelling to the Cape.

For any fans of this film, and indeed, for its detractors also, this is a must have guide to learning more about the behind the scenes gossip. I am glad this book was not written/published until the 25th anniversary of the movie, as enough time has passed for an objective view of the film to be made. There is no denying that this is a powerful, interesting and even disturbing film. I am espcially pleased that a great number of the actors took part in this book. I have always wondered what happened to Ronee Blakley, (who played the fragile Barbara Jean to a T in the film). Do not miss this book if you love the film.

Frommer's Canada Review

Frommer's Canada
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This guide is lacking too many things for me to perceive it useful. First, the pricing is not accurate. Even though it's claimed to be published this year, the prices for the hotels and restaurants were as much as 2 times off the values we encountered during the trip in June. Second, it has very little "cultural" component. The description of the cities is mostly devoted to the hotels and restaurants, which I find to be much easier to inquire about in the internet (plus, it's not very accurate, even forgetting about the weird prices, I mentioned earlier). Information on history and peculiarities of such the cities as Montreal, Ottawa and Toronto is presented on 2 pages and is quite boring and incomplete, compared to wikitravel, e.g.. Overall, even though it's written in a fine style and is pleasant in outlook, the book turned out to be completely useless during the travel and we couldn't avoid reading wikitravel + googling for hotels.

Lost in the Funhouse: The Life and Mind of Andy Kaufman Review

Lost in the Funhouse: The Life and Mind of Andy Kaufman
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've read this book and it is a gem. Having kept the flame of Andy's legacy alive on the World Wide Web for the past four years, I must say that I read this book with a little more of a critical eye than your average Andy Kaufman fan. Bill Zehme did not let me down and I am happy to have a copy of this fine book in my possession. Bill's biography is fascinating and sheer poetry.
I know that Andy's family loves the book because I've spoken to them and they've told me so. I don't think a writer can receive higher praise than to receive it from the immediate family of the subject.
This biography will stand the test of time and years from now will surely serve as the only comprehensive biography of Andy Kaufman. Zehme is the guiding light, the North Star when it comes to the life and times of Andrew Geoffrey Kaufman.
Thanks Bill, I wish the movie "Man on the Moon" would have had half the content, spirit and meaning of your fine tome.

National Geographic Traveler: Washington, DC, 4th edition Review

National Geographic Traveler: Washington, DC, 4th edition
Average Reviews:

Before I got this book, I was expecting a lot from National Geographic, and as always, this book met my expectations. There is a bevy of good stuff between the two covers. Their advice is very extensive which cover many topics, it has suggestions, tips and points of view you've probably never heard from your friends before, the pictures work very good with the advice in this book, just like the Dorling Kindersley Washington, D.C. book, each attraction is sorted by neighborhood, the explanation of Washington, D.C.'s history and Washington today is very well said, the author gives plenty of attention to the places to visit just outside the District's borders. This book has virtually every beginner and intermediate detail I needed for my trip, plus a few interesting advanced ones.
Overall, if you are only staying a day or two in the nation's capital, this might be the only book you need, but if you're staying a little longer, I'd say your best choice for a second book would be the Unofficial Guide. It has perks this guide doesn't, and vice versa. The price you pay for this book on Amazon.com is well worth the great photographs and advice. It may also be helpful to get the free official visitor's guide from the visitor center either way. And I agree that this book does have information and interpretation not available on the internet.
Thanks, National Geographic!
