Every dog has its day. And that day is coming sooner than later for some. Cousins Terry, Tyrelle and Jeff want for nothing when it comes to female "companionship." As the owners of a hot nightclub, they have women lined up (literally) to get at them. Every man's dream, right? Or maybe their girlfriends/wives nightmare.

Terry, the oldest of the three, has creeping down to a fine art. A skill that he has instilled in his two younger cousins from an early age. He's married to Tracy, a woman that has stood by his side despite his many many transgressions. But a woman can only take so much. Will it be too late for Terry and Tracy when he finally realizes that she's the only one for him?

Tyrelle looks ups to his cousin Terry. He's following closely in his footsteps. Even though he has a beautiful and smart girlfriend of several years, he can't seem to keep his pants zipped. Deciding to give his all to his relationship, Tyrelle get all his ducks in a row. What happens when one "duck" gets out of line with some shocking news? Can his relationship weather the storm?

Jeff, seeing that there is only so much hoeing one man can do, wants to settle down with his lady and make it official. Does making if official mean coming clean about his womanizing past? What she doesn't know won't hurt her. Or will it? To tell or not to tell - that is the question!

Excellent debut novel. Solid story with developed likeable characters. Looking forward to more from this author.

An exceptional new author opens a revealing window into the male African American psyche in this captivating first novel about sex, relationships, marriage, and monogamy. Harold L. Turley II makes a sparkling debut with this hip, sexy tale of three men who learn that the life of a player isn't all it's cracked up to be. Terry, Jeff, and Tyrelle manage a nightclub together, where the three cousins have their pick of any woman they desire. Terry is a former college basketball star married to Tracy -- and cheating on her with Angie. But meaningless affairs are starting to leave Terry feeling hollow inside. He decides it's time to clean up his act...only to discover that it's too late. A lifetime player, Jeff has finally realized that he's ready to settle down with his current girlfriend. The problem is, he's feeling guilty about all the times he was unfaithful to her. Clearing his conscience would give him a clean slate, but will it cost him the most important relationship in his life? As for Ty, he's caught between a rock and a hard place: he loves his freedom but at the same time doesn't want to lose his girlfriend. And his lover is about to drop a bombshell that will reverberate across every area of his life. Funny, sensuous, and dead-on target when it comes to the games lovers play, Love's Game tells what happens when the tables are turned and the stakes are raised.

I saw Rodney a couple of years ago in the Salt Lake City airport sitting in a chair waiting for his flight to LAX with his wife. He looked old and frail, but I gave him a wave and he gave me back a wink with his trademark okay sign. That was very cool.
So when I bought this book I was really looking forward to an interesting read....and I found it.
This book has a tons of jokes that are used to separate his stories (and he's got a lot of them) within the chapters. I now realize how hard he worked and really how little he received back in terms of material riches. (He only received $35,000 for Caddyshack with no residuals!)
There are so many funny stories about show business, struggling as a comedian, sex, women, drugs, his youth, his health, friends, marriage, and of course, not getting any respect.
I know that Rodney may not be with us very long as he is in his 80's and dealing with health issues, but I feel lucky to have seen him since the Ed Sullivan days, through the Johnny Carson years, the Miller Lite Beer commercials, the hilarious movies, and up to my incident at the Salt Lake City airport.
Here's a real success story in disguise from a kind man who has made us all laugh for decades.
This book adds so much to my appreciation of this humble and very human man. I'm going to watch "Back To School" and "Caddyshack" again soon.
Thanks Rodney. You have my respect.

A decent book, describes each episode, cast lists etc. I was a little disappointed there wasn't more of the backstage stuff chronicled. Like, what was the real story between Ricky and Jason Bateman? Did Rick really hate him? Was it Rick's parents who forced Jason off the show? Were they so afraid that Jason's growing popularity would take away from The Ricker's? You won't find the answers here.

This is a very well-written and comprehensive survey of post-war British theatre. I do have some minor quibbles with Billington because he tends to discount the still-lasting effect of WWII on British drama, but otherwise this is the best survey I have yet to read of post-war British theatre.

Click Here to see more reviews about:

Michael Billington's new book looks at post-war Britain from a theatrical perspective. It examines the constant interplay between theater and society from the resurgent optimism of the Attlee years to the satire boom of the Sixties and the growth of political theater under Tony Blair in the post-Iraq period. Written by Britain's longest-serving theater critic, the book also offers a passionate defense of the dramatist as the medium's key creative figure. Controversial, witty and informed, "State of the Nation" offers a fresh and challenging look at the vast upheavals that have taken place in Britain and its theater in the course of sixty turbulent years.

Exceptionally well written, funny, shrewd and touching book. Shukert has a keen eye for detail and sharp wit. This is like "Eat, Pray, Love" for the generation that doesn't read books, but does go to see movies. If ever there was a laugh-out-loud version of "Rochelle, Rochelle" - the young girl's strange, erotic journey from Milan to Minsk - this might be it. OK, maybe Shukert never makes it to Minsk, but she does give Europe a good whirl. I'm looking forward to the film version of this, and in the meantime reading her first book: Have You No Shame?: And Other Regrettable Stories

Cynthia Daddona's funny, enlightening and charming look at the world let's us in on a side of life that is both educational and uplifting. She is the kind of person who takes life's lemons and turns them into face masks and chiffon pies! A lighthearted account of one woman's quest for enlightenment.

In a humorous, fresh twist on the topic of spirituality, award-winning writer Cynthia Daddona shares her quest to become a modern-day goddess: a woman in touch with her joyful, feminine, and spiritual self. Her essays and advice offer inspiration, spiritual truths and chuckles that soothe the soul. Her insightful musings range from affirmations to meditations, from yoga to yogurt, from finding Nirvana to finding the perfect pump at Nordstorm. In every essay, you'll find humor mixed with very deep understandings as a metaphor for how to live. Daddona does not claim to be a doctor, a therapist or the Roman goddess Venus, just an everyday woman with a never-ending quest to become completely in touch with her inner soul, inner comic and divine feminine spirit. Indeed, she shows us how humor is a beautiful tool in the never-ending quest for inner wisdom and reminds us that laughter is vital to every goddess.

"Cynthia has a truly divine sense of humor- but what else would you expect from a Modern Day Goddess.""-- Doug Adrianson, Los Angeles Times

"Cynthia shows readers that humor is a beautiful tool in the continuing quest for inner wisdom...You go goddess." -- Publishers Weekly

"Cynthia's humor and energy wake people up with a smile. This goddess has it all." -- Jeanne Bergh, CBS Sunrise Morning News

"Cynthia is a very funny lady. She got me in touch with my inner goddess, who turned out to be an old woman named Maude Frickert. I was so taken by her book on enlightenment, I leave the lights on 24 hours a day." -- Jonathan Winters, Comedian

Frommer's Los Angeles 2006 (Frommer's Complete) Review

Frommer's Los Angeles 2006 (Frommer's Complete)
Average Reviews:

It might appear non sense, but I purchased this book just after I came back from a trip to L.A. In fact, I just wanted to see if I missed something important while I was there...and in fact, I didn't miss much.
Honestly, I think the book has good intentions. Ratings on attractions help people to decide what to do and visit, especially if time is short. However, the relevance of each spot is something that is a personal choice and opinions on what's worthy or not should be up to each reader. This is a feature that could be removed from the book, since it tends to influence people's decisions, sometimes negatively.
Inane comments are also a good feature of this book. Some subjects are not approached in a straight way and it helps us to get tired easily, even before we reach the point we want to. Sense of humor is good, but it should be carefully dosed.
I give this book 3 stars, which is a good rating, because this book makes a good general reference on Los Angeles anyway, but reviews and options given should be a little more unbiased in next editions.

It Had to Be You Review

It Had to Be You
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The love story is a neglected genre in gay fiction. And it's even rarer to read a gay love story that features believable characters and situations. The author of It Had To Be You must be congratulated for creating a story full of the quirky kind of incidents and complications which are so typical of real life. Truth is always stranger than fiction, but in this case, the fiction is enhanced by the addition of just the kind of strangeness readers can recognize from their own lives or the lives of people they know. Daniel, the main character, transcends the stereotype of the drag queen, becoming a living breathing human being. Blaine, the object of his often ambivalent desires, undergoes a series of transformations from nameless hunk to sensitive and vulnerable nice guy as his character is revealed more fully during the course of the novel. There are no cardboard cutouts here. Daniel's fellow drag artistes are nicely drawn, and so are the several female characters in the book. The somewhat meandering plot closely follows the contours of real experience and mirrors Daniel's all too believable confusion as he tries to change his life and find true love. There are no gratuitous laughs here, just chuckles of recognition. This is a sweet natured story, a little heavy on backstory and exposition, but always entertaining, and the characters are people you'd like to have as friends. I hope Mr. Beck is working on another novel. If he's not, he should be.

Set aside a couple of hours and read this book non-stop. You won't have a choice because you cannot put it down until you have finished. One story just makes you hungry for another. Caution: do not attempt to read one of the stories to another person, because you will be unable to speak, having fallen into uncontrollable spasms of laughter. I tried to read one to my wife and we both fell on the floor howling.
This book appeals to outdoor persons of course, but the humor will not be lost on anyone.

Footprint Cardiff (Footprint - Pocket Guides) Review

Footprint Cardiff (Footprint - Pocket Guides)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I had already purchased several useful guides on Wales, The Rough Guide to Wales and Wales by The Lonely Planet, both had their strongpoints, are larger versus this handy pocket size. I wanted more detail on Cardiff so I purchase this next. This pocket size guide has something I value a lot; more internet websites listing for hotels, other places of interest, with a succinct description. Naturally, it has a more expansive list of places to stay, dine, with price range coding. Also suggestions on what to sight see, as one would expect. It is well organized and also has information on the surrounding South Wales area. It has a short chronology of the history of the area. Nice city section and area maps are in the final pages. Limited black and white photos are interspersed in this guide, more would have delighted. This guide had information on local golf with websites. I am an avid golfer and have other golf guides that cover that topic, but did not have some of these included.

Bertram Goodhue: His Life And Residential Architecture Review

Bertram Goodhue: His Life And Residential Architecture
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Written by Pamela Skewes-Cox in EDEN, Vol. 10 No. 2, Summer 2007. Permission to reprint granted by the California Garden & Landscape History Society
Romy Wyllie's newly released book Bertram Goodhue; His Life and Residential Architecture, published by W.W Norton and Company, Inc., is an engaging and well researched investigation into the life and work of one of the most talented and productive architects practicing in the U.S. at the turn-of-the-last-century. In a highly readable text Wyllie provides an analysis of 26 of Goodhue's most comprehensive commissions, as well as a description of the lives and excessive tastes of his clients. The author also tracks the progression of Goodhue's style - including his eventual break from tradition - and weaves all into a deft portrait of both the man and the artist.
Wyllie's research benefited greatly from the abundance of archival materials that have been carefully preserved by the Goodhue family and by academic institutions. However, it takes exceptional talent and perseverance to weed out the best of it. Wyllie has done just that. For example, Bertram Goodhue ( 1869-1924) was a prolific letter writer who wrote articulately about himself and others. Wyllie takes careful advantage of her sources, using them wisely to give a particular richness to the narrative. In a speech to his staff at the 1922 Twelfth-Night party, he says:
"I can't begin to tell you how fond I am of every member of the office force, - how much I value them all, and their various abilities. Of this force I am but one, a man-in-a-blouse, so to speak, with this difference; that I have the power of veto. I believe it makes for happiness that men's work should be interesting and not always mere work.... And everybody is free to differ with me in my solution of any given problem .... I often come back to find my own solution drawn out, with another, and distinctly better one, alongside."
[From "Twelfth-Night in Mr. Goodhue's Office", Pencil Points 3, no.2 (February 1922): 26]
The reader comes away not only with a thorough knowledge of the architectural work and Goodhue's relationship with his clients, colleagues and staff, but also an appreciation of Goodhue as a human being.
For those drawn to an architect's vision of how a structure works in relation to its surrounding, Wyllie is generous in offering up this side of Goodhue's innovations with landscaping and gardens. A trip to the Mediterranean, India, and Persia in 1901 with his new client, James Waldron Gillespie, marked a turning point for Goodhue. From this point on, he became adept in integrating shallow reflecting pools, pavilions, exotic tress and shrubs, courtyards, fountains, and waterways into his plans. The Dater and Gillespie residences in Santa Barbara, and the Coppell residence in Pasadena are a few of Wyllie's well documented examples of Goodhue's innovations and his ability to bring garden, landscape, and residence together seamlessly.
Bertram Goodhue will take his place alongside some of the best and brightest of his generation. Wyllie's book comes at an opportune time; her book is an excellent addition to recent publications on other architects and architecture of this period.

I tried a few recommendations from Frommers and a few from local Chicago residents. I found the book's suggestions were more accurate that the residents'!
Frommer's isn't shy about giving opinions about places (e.g. "all the restaurants in Greektown are about the same") whereas Lonely Planet & other books tend to sound objective for their restaurant reviews & end up giving the traveler no guidance at all. Beware to call all the places you want to visit though. Even though my Frommers Chicago book is current (2004), I came across 1 restaurant in the book that already closed down, and found hours to the Art Institute had already changed.

The Shooting Script Review

The Shooting Script
Average Reviews:

Laurence Klavan's THE SHOOTING SCRIPT is a lot of over-the-top breezy, gonzo fun. Like a Janet Evanovich novel for boys. While the plot engages and the pace brisk, my big problem with this novel was the absence of women who weren't either boinking main character Ray Milano or somehow related to him. Though I guess some readers might find this a plus rather than a minus.
