Fodor's Walt Disney World with Kids 2011: with Universal Orlando, SeaWorld and Aquatica (Special-Interest Titles)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
My husband, 13 and 5 year old daughters, and I are Disney veterans. We would rather take a Disney vacation, than almost anything else. We love Disney World, we love Disney Cruises, and we have enjoyed Disneyland a number of times. Needless to say, we own a number of Disney travel guides. I have to say, though, FODOR'S WALT DISNEY WORLD WITH KIDS 2011 is one of the best that I have seen.
To begin with, FODOR'S WALT DISNEY WORLD WITH KIDS 2011 is both well organized and easy to read. A lot of guides have special little hints and tips embedded in their pages, as does FODOR'S WALT DISNEY WORLD WITH KIDS 2011. The difference is that with most other guides, the font on the tips and tricks is smaller, cramped, and hard to read. They also make the pages look busy, confused, and jumbled. However, in FODOR'S WALT DISNEY WORLD WITH KIDS 2011, these helpful hints are in the same size font as the rest of the text. They flow naturally as you read and are indicated with bold lettering or color. This makes looking things up extremely fast and easy.
The chapters in FODOR'S WALT DISNEY WORLD WITH KIDS 2011 are also well done and nicely organized. There is a chapter on hotels, one on each main park, one on each minor park (the water parks, Downtown Disney, etc.), one on dining, and several on NON-Disney attractions like the new Harry Potter park. Each chapter has maps and phone numbers, as well as excellent planning aids. Even with all the times we've visited Disney World, I found places and adventures that were either new or we had missed. This really helped us plan our next trip, when we plan to focus on things we've never seen. Additionally, each chapter provides hints on finding Hidden Mickeys, which is one of my family's favorite pastimes. And one of the best features of FODOR'S WALT DISNEY WORLD WITH KIDS 2011 is that each section includes a list of suitable attractions by age and scare factor. With such a wide age span between my kids, I find these pages to be exceedingly helpful.
As I said before, FODOR'S WALT DISNEY WORLD WITH KIDS 2011 is one of the best guides for Walt Disney World that I have seen. It can replace about 5 other guides that we use. And traveling lightly is always a plus. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED for all Disney lovers.

Uncle John's Unsinkable Bathroom Reader (Uncle John's Bathroom Reader) Review

Uncle John's Unsinkable Bathroom Reader (Uncle John's Bathroom Reader)
Average Reviews:

You have to give the Bathroom Readers' Institute credit. Twenty-odd years ago they hit on a winning formula and haven't looked back since. Thousands of pages later here comes version 21, all 541 pages of it! And, just like its predecessors, it delivers the goods - tons of quirky yet fascinating facts and bits of trivia.
As with other Bathroom Readers, BRI has divided the info into categories such as Bathroom Lore, Fads & Flops, Sports, Origins, Forgotten History and Creatures Features along with new categories like Canadiana. Features are broken down into Short (Quick Read), Medium (2-3 pages), Long and Extended.
It's probably just me but I couldn't work up the same enthusiasm I once had for the latest Bathroom Reader, hence the 4 star rating. As much as I enjoyed much of the book, I have to admit I skipped some sections. Maybe just a case of Bathroom Reader Burn-out!?!
Having said that, I don't doubt trivia buffs, lifelong learners, etc. will enjoy this latest offering of odd yet interesting info. Recommended.

My husband and I have recently semi-retired, and have spent considerable time traveling throughout the Finger Lakes as well as some other areas in New York State. We found the information contained in this guidebook to be well researched, concise, infomative and accurate. It is easy to find specific interests in the book, and we would highly recommend it to anyone interested in touring NYS.

Thug Lovin' (Thug 4) Review

Thug Lovin' (Thug 4)

First, let me say that I have been a "die hard" Wahida fan. I have read all of her books. However, "this &*#@) RIGHT HERE " was unbelievable (and not in a good way)! We fell in love with Trae, Tasha, Kaylin, Angel and the rest of the crew in books 1 - 3. Those characters are not recognizable in Thug Lovin' (book 4). I feel as though I have been lied to. At the end of Thug Lovin, I hated Trae, was disappointed in Tasha, disgusted by Marvin and saddened by Kyra. I can appreciate the need to "mix it up". But, this was a GRIMY tale. Trae's behavior was inconceivable. The fact that he cheated on Tasha was the LEAST of his foul behavior. What he did to Tasha at the end of the book is what we tell our daughters, sisters, girlfriends, etc to NEVER accept. It was inconceivable, unnecessary and not consistent with Trae's character. Why take such a loved character and have him beat his wife to the point where he doesn't know how she got on the floor? Are you kidding me? What is that and what was the point of reducing him (them) to that level? Don't devoted readers of the series deserve better than that? How is that possibly 5 stars? Furthermore, the Tasha that we know would NEVER accept that behavior from him. The real shame is that there are so few TRUE showcases of Black Love. The magic of books 1-3 is the message that our powerful connections do exist (contrary to what the media would say) and that they are to be celebrated. What Trae did to Tasha at the end of the book cheapened him and the story told about him and Tasha in books 2 and 3. It went far beyond "shock value". How can he possibly be redeemed? What's next? Does Kaylin shoot Angel? Is Faheem a cross-dresser? Does Jaz develop a crack addiction? We waited a year for THIS? I feel cheated.

Tasha and Trae, the hood's favorite couple, are still together following the events of Thug Matrimony. Even with their relocation to sunny Los Angeles, the drama of New York cannot be escaped. From running a nightclub to dealing with models, shady lawyers, big money, new kinds of temptations, seductions, and drugs-not to mention new love interests-can this infamous couple weather all the storms and keep it together?

My soon-to-be husband is Romantically Illiterate. He will do romantic things, as long as I spell out each step of the way. I found this book on Amazon.com and figured why not. I ordered it and when it came in I read it from cover to cover highlighting everything I found romantic. (this book is now covered with yellow highlighting.) I put a ribbon around the book and gave it to my honey as a "just because I love you gift". This has changed our relationship. It's Great!!! Now all he has to do is open the book, look for the yellow, and do it. He doesn't have to think about it and I can be pleasantly surprised with whatever he chooses. I even look at it for ideas for him. It's a one in a million book.

Having recently used the Eyewitness series of guide books in Italy, this book isn't in the same league. The organization, accuracy, and presentation are all less than perfect (and being unfamiliar in general with Montreal I can't comment on the coverage). It has the de rigeur sights, restaurants, and maps, but some maps don't have enough detail, and in one case, the location of a famous bagel store was off by a couple of blocks.
In short, buy this guide if you are going and can't find something better, but expect a few hiccups.

Super book. I'm not working in showbiz nor am I in recovery but I relate to this book cover to cover. In this book Ed Driscoll takes you through various events in his life, some tragic, some uplifting but all told in a wonderfully humorous yet insightful way. Specifically he shares some of his online dating experiences which are laugh-out-loud hilarious. Even his stories about struggling with his carreer and later making it in hollywood after being sober was funny. A great book for anyone who loves to laugh and grow. I am getting some copies for my fellow office workers becasue I can't do the stories justice when I try to tell them myself.

A witty take on recovery, romance, and showbiz—from a gifted comedian.

Readers will laugh out loud, wince in discomfort, and ultimately celebrate the triumph of recovery in this uproarious memoir by comedian Ed Driscoll. Irreverant and provocative, Driscoll spins everyday annoyances and mishaps into amusing escapades—even managing to find the lighter side of one of the great tragedies of his life: alcoholism. Spilled Gravy is Driscoll's running commentary about the entertainment business, personal ads, and how the "career gravy" began flowing again once he became sober. A highly sought "punch up" writer, Driscoll has contributed to television shows such as The Drew Carey Show, television specials such as The Academy Awards, and feature films such as Scooby-Doo. In 2003, his stand-up show about the travails of online dating, "Mismatch Maker," ran for nine weeks at the legendary Comedy Store in Los Angeles.

"Ed's book sucker punched me into paroxysms of laughter."—Dennis Miller, comedian

High Times Hard Times Review

High Times Hard Times
Average Reviews:

Seems like a truly honest, candid account of the jazz life of a famous jazz singer, warts and all. Very touching in its candor in which the singer's habits brought down her considerable talents and what could have seemed like a glamorous life on the road really was far more debased than what one might imagine. Besides the sordid side, a lot of opinions about the jazz abilities of a lot of famed musicians of the forties and fifties; generally, a very honest, open and sometimes painful account of the jazz life of a great artist. I had the pleasure of meeting the aritst in person at a performance a few years ago, and she revealed that she had never read the final product herself. Highly worthwhile.

Susan Sparks has done the remarkable: She has written a book that is touching, informative and funny, all at the same time. She has a skilled way of making spiritual and theological concepts accessible to every reader. You will learn something about yourself, others and God from this book. And more importantly, you will have a clearer glimpse into a God who who laughs with us, all the time cheering us on to deeper insights and more fulfilling life. I am in Susan debt for helping me see the God I worship is also one I smile with, and indeed laugh with. God seems closer to me as a result of reading this book. Fr. Edward L. Beck, C.P.

Laughter was honored by the ancients as a spiritual healing tool and celebrated by the world's great religions. So why aren't we laughing along the spiritual path today? What would happen if we did? In this personal and funny look at humor as a spiritual practice, Rev. Susan Sparks--an ex-lawyer turned comedian and Baptist minister--presents a convincing case that the power of humor radiates far beyond punch lines. Laughter can help you: * Remove the fearful mask of a God who doesn't laugh * Debunk the myth that you don't deserve joy * Find perspective when faced with adversity * Exercise forgiveness for yourself and others * Reclaim play as a spiritual practice * Heal--emotionally, physically and spiritually * Keep your faith when God is silent * Live with elegance, beauty and generosity of spirit Whatever your faith tradition--or if you have none at all--join this veteran of the punch line and the pulpit in reclaiming the forgotten humor legacy found in thousands of years of human spiritual history.

Love Stories in This Town Review

I loved this collection from start to finish, which is very unusual for me. The prose was spare and minimal, yet the smallest details seemed to illuminate the characters and their world. Ward is often fun and witty here, but what I found most engaging about this collection was how the characters haunted me afterwards. With subtlety and a soft-touch, the author gets to the heart of the matter each and every time. Even reading the story about a 9/11 widow, I never felt as if the events drove the writing. It's all about the characters here. They feel organic, real, and brimming with stories worth hearing.

I read this book in hardcover as well as several others for a paper I wrote. The author was able to take the disparate threads of musicians, artists, writers and benefactors who contributed to the Renaissance and weave together a chronology that contained pictures, specific information about the "hotspots" in Harlem and complete, sometimes intimate portraits of all concerned. If the Harlem Renaissance was ever to be depicted in a movie, this book would be a ready-made screen play. The hardcover edition is worth the extra money.

I found the guide to be VERY well organized and helpful. The restaurant and hotel suggestions (we stayed at the Cow Hollow Motor Inn) were helpful and spot on. We were not disappointed.
The fold out map could have been more extensive, especially because a couple of the restaurants were in locations that extended beyond the map itself.
The book is light (weight-wise) which is a plus in my view especially when you're doing a lot on foot.

This book is the best I've read of its genre. Rob Grader means it when he says something's free, and he gives away the catch where there is one.
After reading his book, I have now
*seen a Broadway play...for FREE
*seen the Knicks at Madison Square Garden...for FREE
*found a bar with $3 mixed drinks and free popcorn
*furnished my apartment FREE
*bought half-price bagels to last a whole week
*seen FREE acoustic performances.
The one I haven't got yet is the free movie tickets, but that's coming.
Oh yes--I've been in New York less than six weeks, living off savings, working as an intern and not getting paid.
BUY THIS BOOK! (But if you're really cheap, you'll do what I did and read it at a bookstore first, then buy it used online).

I purchased this book together with Fodor's Florida 2011 for my recent trip to FL. It turned out that Fodor's was much more useful. I learned from Fodor's more than from LP on average, and I like that Fodor's book is more colorful. Maybe LP is more useful if you want to cut down expenditures, which was not my case. For a trip to China or Algeria, I always buy LP if I bring only one book, but for a more relaxing trip to some rich country/states, I don't see the typical dominance by LP in terms of quality/quantity of information...
