Roseannearchy: Dispatches from the Nut Farm

Rosanne speaks the truth so bluntly that it's funny, and then when you think about it, it's shocking because there's so much that's true to your experience. Contrast the blunt force of her take on any issue compared to the Oprahfication of America and you'll see how far we've fallen. Her solution is "simple truth" to most any problem. "It's not complicated, just do the right thing," she writes over and over, whether it be MidEast Peace or the "war" on drugs or stupid kids. I think she overemphasizes her emotional response to her singing the National Anthem back in the early 90s. It was a comedienne's take on the silliness of that ritual, the same ritual where the field is filled by multimillionaire ballplayers while us poor slobs who bought tickets to see them can't afford an $8 hot dog at the same game! Buy the book, you'll laugh, and then you'll be pissed off at how right she is on so many issues. Don't look for help from the news media because they don't understand someone who doesn't fit into their predictable little boxes.

I picked up Phil Rosenthal's "You're Lucky You're Funny" for research, as I needed a bit of background info for a novel I'm writing. My intention was to skim it and move on. After one page, however, I knew I wasn't putting down this book until I'd read every delicious word. It's not only hilarious, but so charming I feel like I've just spent a vacation with a favorite friend. A very smart, very funny favorite friend. Plus, it taught me more about the inside world of sitcoms than I'd even hoped.
But even if you're just in it for the laughs, this book is worth the price. Hell, the fruit-of-the-month story alone is enough to make me recommend it. And that's not even the funniest part (for my money, it's his description of the "all-inclusive" vacation from hell).
I read this in hardcover, but see that it's also available in audio format, which I think might be a lot of fun, as well. I listened to a clip, and Phil Rosenthal has a delightfully anachronistic Old New York accent--kind of a cross between Top Cat and Nicely Nicely from Guys and Dolls. So whether you read or listen, you're in for a great trip.

Though Fort Worth was first established in 1849 as a military outpost along what was then the western frontier of Texas, the fort itself was abandoned by 1853. But the civilian settlement that had grown up around it continued to thrive. Following the Civil War, the city and its residents worked hard to become a provisions center for the drovers moving millions of Texas longhorns up the cattle trails to Kansas and beyond. Soon, Fort Worth was also a major hub for rail and other transportation industries, and in the twentieth century, it became an oil center as well. Today, the bustling metropolitan region continues to reinvent itself while also diligently preserving the unique heritage that brings millions of visitors to Fort Worth every year.

Excellent New York guide book: filled with many places to eat, go, visit, and simply ejoy. Also features detailed pop out maps of the city and surrounding areas. Imporant NYC phone numbers. Includes NYC history and information about specific areas and things to do. For example, let's say you want to know about Central Park. The book has a color picture of the park. It also has the parks location listed, information about the visitor center, a phone number, which buses you can take to get there, what hours it is opened, the cost, the website, and restaurants. There. The book is also entirely in color. Very cheap too!...

Silver Linings: Triumphs of the Chronically Ill and Physically Challenged Review

Silver Linings: Triumphs of the Chronically Ill and Physically Challenged
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Shaena Engle has assembled a remarkable group of inspirational stories. Her book, "Silver Linings" chronicles the accomplishments of seventeen individuals that reached beyond their physical limitations and personal tragedies to touch the lives of others in a positive manner.
Each unique story shares a common theme of individuals triumphing over the hand that life dealt them to achieve life-affirming goals. Perhaps the most inspirational story is that of editor Engle herself, detailed in the book's introduction. Diagnosed at the young age of sixteen with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), she oftentimes felt isolated, lonely and confused. She yearned for guidance from others facing life with a chronic illness. On her long, arduous road to recovery, she motivated herself by setting meaningful goals - goals that inspired her to fight the illness and survive. Her goal for this book is to encourage readers facing similar predicaments.
I recommend this book to anybody, physical limitations notwithstanding, that has ever been told, "You can't do that" but chose not listen to the admonishment. This is an excellent read for the person that is determined to reach for the stars, and when clouds get in the way find their own silver lining.

It's Not Easy Bein' Me: A Lifetime of No Respect but Plenty of Sex and Drugs

I saw Rodney a couple of years ago in the Salt Lake City airport sitting in a chair waiting for his flight to LAX with his wife. He looked old and frail, but I gave him a wave and he gave me back a wink with his trademark okay sign. That was very cool.
So when I bought this book I was really looking forward to an interesting read....and I found it.
This book has a tons of jokes that are used to separate his stories (and he's got a lot of them) within the chapters. I now realize how hard he worked and really how little he received back in terms of material riches. (He only received $35,000 for Caddyshack with no residuals!)
There are so many funny stories about show business, struggling as a comedian, sex, women, drugs, his youth, his health, friends, marriage, and of course, not getting any respect.
I know that Rodney may not be with us very long as he is in his 80's and dealing with health issues, but I feel lucky to have seen him since the Ed Sullivan days, through the Johnny Carson years, the Miller Lite Beer commercials, the hilarious movies, and up to my incident at the Salt Lake City airport.
Here's a real success story in disguise from a kind man who has made us all laugh for decades.
This book adds so much to my appreciation of this humble and very human man. I'm going to watch "Back To School" and "Caddyshack" again soon.
Thanks Rodney. You have my respect.

A decent book, describes each episode, cast lists etc. I was a little disappointed there wasn't more of the backstage stuff chronicled. Like, what was the real story between Ricky and Jason Bateman? Did Rick really hate him? Was it Rick's parents who forced Jason off the show? Were they so afraid that Jason's growing popularity would take away from The Ricker's? You won't find the answers here.

This is a very well-written and comprehensive survey of post-war British theatre. I do have some minor quibbles with Billington because he tends to discount the still-lasting effect of WWII on British drama, but otherwise this is the best survey I have yet to read of post-war British theatre.

Click Here to see more reviews about:

Michael Billington's new book looks at post-war Britain from a theatrical perspective. It examines the constant interplay between theater and society from the resurgent optimism of the Attlee years to the satire boom of the Sixties and the growth of political theater under Tony Blair in the post-Iraq period. Written by Britain's longest-serving theater critic, the book also offers a passionate defense of the dramatist as the medium's key creative figure. Controversial, witty and informed, "State of the Nation" offers a fresh and challenging look at the vast upheavals that have taken place in Britain and its theater in the course of sixty turbulent years.

Exceptionally well written, funny, shrewd and touching book. Shukert has a keen eye for detail and sharp wit. This is like "Eat, Pray, Love" for the generation that doesn't read books, but does go to see movies. If ever there was a laugh-out-loud version of "Rochelle, Rochelle" - the young girl's strange, erotic journey from Milan to Minsk - this might be it. OK, maybe Shukert never makes it to Minsk, but she does give Europe a good whirl. I'm looking forward to the film version of this, and in the meantime reading her first book: Have You No Shame?: And Other Regrettable Stories
