I was really looking forward to this book. Key word was. I normally wait to buy books until they are under $5.00 used, but when I saw this book I made an exception. I love stand up comedy, so much so that I wish there was some way to better articulate it to you. I SIMPLY LOVE IT- There, I resorted to all-caps. I own all of Patton Oswalt's CDs, same for David Cross. I even have multiple bootlegs for both. I bought Live in Nerd Rage and own every thing Zach Galifianakis has ever done. I own every Comedians of Comedy thing produced. So when I saw that a book was being made about the very thing that I love I bought it instantly.
With all of this in mind, here I am with $12 less in my pocket and disappointed. One of the old adages of writing is to show the audience, not tell it. The author should take this in mind. The book is 300 some odd pages of him telling us how funny, interesting and creative the people involved are, and then retelling their standup bits and sketch ideas. Here's a tip, instead of telling us (mostly in his old words) about a certain sketch or routine, show us how it came about. He brings up Patton's disappointment with MadTV, but then tells us that it wasn't the producers who were to blame but rather the network for cutting down sketch ideas. What were these sketch ideas? I feel that if you decide to write a book about someone and they felt creatively hampered; why not tell what they wanted to do differently then the network? A sketch idea that got cut would have been far more interesting then simply reciting his IMDB profile over 5 pages (which the author routinely does.)
Instead of simply telling us that Patton Oswalt found a like minded person in David Cross, show us why they are like minded. There has to be some interesting story about when they both realized that they could form a bond. The author obviously went through intensive interviews with the comedians (how else would anyone know who the head of a comedy labels inspiration and mentor was) he should have told stories about the behind the scenes stuff. I'm pretty sure that at one time most of the comedians were roommates, why not tell stories about that experience? Almost anything would have been better then simply the author retelling his favorite routines.
I guess I am just disappointed that a book that should have been a behind the scenes look at an upcoming art scene seemed like it was simply a generic and bloated college newspaper piece, and a poorly written one at that. A good 1/3 of this book is simply worthless information that seems to be written only for the author's ego.

Overpriced two-drink minimums and potato skins, bad Clinton jokes on late night these used to be the hallmarks of comedy, an art relegated to the controlled environs of comedy clubs and network TV. Fortunately, in the late 90s, a daring breed of comedians began rejecting the status quo altogether and, by taking cues from the indie-music world, started reviving comedy as a savvy and groundbreaking art form. Mock Stars delves headfirst into this revolutionary scene, tracing the evolution of indie comedy as part of the underground music circuit and into mainstream America. Through candid interviews with the major players, including David Cross, Patton Oswalt, Neil Hamburger, Maria Bamford, Fred Armisen, Aziz Ansari, Jon Wurster, Aimee Mann, and dozens of others, Wenzel reveals how comedy is becoming relevant and dangerously funny again.

I had to keep reminding myself as I read this, that this book is catagorized as teen fiction.
The story is simple, a teenage thespian, shy in the world, transforming on stage, has a huge crush on "Mr. Perfect." The theme is that sometimes what we are looking for is right in front of us the entire time.
The story is cute, charming and very simple. I don't believe teenagers would enjoy this book, but it offers a fun story for the 9-12 set. The book is clean-cut and there is no objectionable language in the story. The characters are likeable enough but lightly drawn.
As an adult, I found the dialogue unrealistic. The characters had no depth. The entire story except for a scene or two take place at the school. I don't think pre-teens will be bothered by these weaknesses.
It has a cute, predicable ending. I do believe girls 9-12 would enjoy this book as young girls are fascinated by teenagers. I can recommend it for this age group, though not for teens and certainly not adults.

Stand-Up and Die Review

Stand-Up and Die

Mannie Grand is a large woman with a big heart and a keen mind. She's also a stand up comedian who ends up investigating the murder of one of her cohorts. Cleverly written so that gags and humor don't intrude upon the mystery and the plot, this book is a fast summer read. It's not Tolstoy but I didn't expect it to be. The dialogue is the selling point of this tale. The folks talk and act like real Minnesotans (without the corney "Fargo" dialect). The ending seemed to wind up a little too fast for my liking, sort of like "Murder She Wrote" on speed. But maybe I just wanted to remain in Mannie's world for a while longer.
A very satisfying read.

This book is a humrous, witty, and thoroughly enjoyable autobiography of Jeff Foxworthy. This book covers all aspects of his life, from going fishing with his grandfather, hunting with his father, and hanging out with his best friends. This book contains many jokes and humorous stories within that will appeal to any true redneck. Coming from a small town myself, I found that this book had a lot in it which I could relate to. One of the last chapters contains Jeff's explanations of how he came up with some of his You Might Be A Redneck If.. jokes. All in all, this is a book that will keep you laughing for a long time. Jeff is one of the best comedians out there today. His humor never fails to make me laugh like crazy.

Dangerously Funny: The Uncensored Story of The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I think I must have seen every episode of that show as a kid growing up and this behind the scenes look is fascinating. The author covers pretty much every episode their creation and evolution, and interviews many of the participants, many of whom went on to famous careers themselves. Steve Martin. Rob Reiner. And of course Pat Paulsen. I had never realized that the Bob Einstein who played "Officer Judy" and now haunts "Curb Your Enthusiam" is Albert Brooks' brother. Tommy Smothers is particularly fascinating when you see how he was the driving force behind the show and realize just how sharp he is compared to the character he played. Even if you weren't a big fan, this book also takes a look at a key transition in American culture as the show manages to straddle the traditional while making way for a new era. So many famous bands had their beginnings there. The Who, Jefferson Airplane, Buffalo Springfield. By the end, even the Beatles were guests. It made me miss the days of one television, 3 channels, and the whole family having to watch the same thing, especially when I got to snicker at the jokes that were targeted at my generation and going over the head of my parents. What's sad is when you pull your head out of this book and look at the endless prattle of today's reality television and realize we can never return to this level of creativity just because of the economics of television. Great stuff.

Straight Talk, No Chaser: How to Find, Keep, and Understand a Man Review

Straight Talk, No Chaser: How to Find, Keep, and Understand a Man
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)

Comedian and media star Steve Harvey has now penned his second best seller. In this book he is directing his advice to women, but I believe that men will benefit from this book just as much. The objective is to give women an informed understanding of men, and only a man could write such a book. There is no question that he is coming at relationships from a different point of view based on having living in his own intense relationships. He knows what works and what doesn't, and he has spent considerable time trying to figure out how a man is hardwired in his brain differently than a woman. Most of us are dealing with the behavior resulting from how we think. Harvey is suggesting that we deal with the thinking itself. A key thought that he has developed is that everything we as men do is filtered through our title, which simply means who we are. The next question is how we get that title, which means what we do for a living. The final question becomes what regard we are held in by our fellow human beings. He is very honest in saying that by this we mean what is the compensation we receive. Harvey believes that unless we come to terms with these three questions prior to marriage, we probably can't be successfully married and therein lies the enormous divorce rate we witness in our society. Men are marrying prior to having an understanding of who they are. Without that self knowledge the relationship is doomed before it even gets started. I believe that Harvey is touching new ground in this book, and certainly has become his own person. In the book he develops the idea that we as men have to learn how to be men before we can be anything to anyone else, who chooses to love us. What's even more important is that we certainly must do this before we can love them back. We probably all realize by now that women prefer flowers, and yet men wish to buy them plants that will live for years. It's the same concept with weddings. Women dream about weddings, and yet have any of us ever met a man who dreams about his wedding day? Strange isn't it? The author goes through the ages of a man's life and what a man has to figure out during each decade of his life. What Harvey has to say is fascinating: The 20's
You must make a decision to figure out your life, what do you want to do, what is your work? While we are figuring out our work, a woman is concerned with her biological clock, while for us it's the financial clock. The 30's
The game is getting old. We are looking for a woman with the least amount of drama. Can she add support to our lives, is she loyal, and will she bring fun to relationship as well? The 40's
Nothing can be as good as coming home to a family of people who threw their arms around you. A man needs somebody he can talk to, who can give you comfort, and companionship. The 50's
It's time to solidify your legacy, as well as to realize that your body is starting to betray you.

CONCLUSION:As men we are hunters, and we show our love for a woman by doing three things:
1)We PROVIDE for her
2)We PROTECT her
3)We PROFESS our love for her I think we as readers will learn a great deal from this book. There is much wisdom in what Harvey has to teach us. Whether it's regarding the conflict of he won't commit, while she won't leave, or how to claim the blessing of the breakup, there is much to gain. Just remember not to buy into the fairy tale, and thank you for reading this review. Richard C. Stoyeck

In the instant number one New York Times bestseller Act Like a Lady, Think Like a Man, Steve Harvey gave millions of women around the globe insight into what men really think about love, intimacy, and commitment. In his new book he zeros in on what motivates men and provides tips on how women can use that knowledge to get more of what they need out of their relationships, whether it's more help around the house, more of the right kind of attention in the bedroom, more money in the joint bank account, or more truth when it comes to the hard questions, such as: Are you committed to building a future together? Does my success intimidate you? Have you cheated on me?

In Straight Talk, No Chaser: How to Find, Keep, and Understand a Man, Steve Harvey shares information on:

- How to Get the Truth Out of Your Man Tired of answers that are deceptive? Harvey lays out a three-tier, CIA-style of questioning that will leave your man no choice but to cut to the chase and deliver the truth.

- Dating Tips, Decade by Decade Whether you're in your twenties and just starting to date seriously, in your thirties and feeling the tick of the biological clock, or in your forties and beyond, Steve provides insight into what a man, in each decade of his life, is looking for in a mate.

- How to Minimize Nagging and Maximize Harmony at Home He said he'd cut the lawn on Saturday, and you may have been within reason to think that that meant Saturday before ten in the evening, but exploding at him is only going to ruin the mood for everyone, which means no romance. Steve shows you how to talk to your man in a way that moves him to action and keeps the peace.

And there's much more, including Steve's candid answers to questions you've always wanted to ask men.

Drawing on a lifetime of experience and the feedback women have shared with him in reaction to Act Like a Lady, Think Like a Man, Harvey offers wisdom on a wealth of topics relevant to both sexes today. He also gets more personal, sharing anecdotes from his own family history. Always direct, often funny, and incredibly perceptive, media personality, comedian, philanthropist, and (finally) happily married husband, Steve Harvey proves once again that he is the king of relationships.

Act Like a Lady, Think Like a Man: What Men Really Think About Love, Relationships, Intimacy, and Commitment Review

Act Like a Lady, Think Like a Man: What Men Really Think About Love, Relationships, Intimacy, and Commitment
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The central premise of Steve Harvey's book is that women are not setting stringent enough standards in their romantic dealings with men. As such, he posits, they are giving away their social power and selling themselves short on their dating/mating goals.
Steve is partially correct, but he misses the central point. It is true that women do tend to settle for less than they truly want when dating, but the damage they're doing to themselves is not ultimately a result of letting men get away with murder, so to speak. Rather, the problem originates from the fact that women are choosing the wrong men. Decent men don't look for any opportunity to take advantage of women. They don't take that mile when given the proverbial inch. The men who do are the players, chiselers and con artists, the kinds of men who may look good in the store window but fall totally apart when you get them home from the mall.
'Act Like a Lady' ultimately is a rehashing of the familiar 'men are incorrigible dogs' theory of gender. It's a tired story that I'd hope we had moved past, but here it is again in a new package. Yes, men like sex. Yes, men like to look around. But decent men are able to control their urges, especially when they know that not doing so will cause great pain to those around them. Steve's theory doesn't stand up to real life, where if you spend any time, you quickly realize that uniqueness is a defining human personality trait.
Most women do have high standards--that is, until they run into a man who knows all the right things to say to circumvent their defenses. A woman can absolutely KNOW that she's worth all the trouble, but she'll totally drop her guard when a skilled player comes along saying all the right things. He's selling something she didn't even consciously realize that she wanted, and in the end she's a sucker for it. Some guys get very good at this because they practice deception from an early age with girls. It's up to women to see these men for who they are and to look the other way when they pour on the insincere charm.
Women need to realize that the adage 'all that glitters is not gold' applies to men as well as minerals.

The Haunted Smile: The Story Of Jewish Comedians In America Review

The Haunted Smile: The Story Of Jewish Comedians In America
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)

This is one of only a few books which, after having read it, I wish I had written it. Of course, I am wholly unqualified to undertake such a task. However, I would have thoroughly enjoyed completing the research required and taken full advantage of every opportunity to interview, personally, as many of the Jewish comedians as possible. Also, as many as possible of the (non-performing) Jewish writers of comedy such as Larry David, Larry Gelbart, and Neil Simon. In a brilliant Introduction, Epstein observes: "The story of Jewish comedians in America is one of triumph and success. But their stage smile is tinged with sadness. It is haunted by the Jewish past, by the deep stains in American Jewish life -- the desire to be accepted and the concern for a culture disappearing -- by the centuries of Jewish life too frequently interrupted by hate, and by the knowledge that too often for Jewish audiences, a laugh masked a shudder. The comedians' story in America includes bitter encounters with anti-Semitism and the lures of an attractive culture along the way. The jokes these comedians told, their gags, and their nervous patter need to be set alongside the obstacles they overcame."
In this volume, Epstein combines the skills of a disciplined historian and cultural anthropologist with a writing style which has Snap! Crackle! and Pop! Obviously, he also delights in the comic art of so many who "exemplified two great themes of American Jewish life: assimilation and the search for an American Jewish identity....Also, they made Jews proud" while entertaining them as well as ever-increasing numbers of others who also went to the movies, turned on radios and then television sets, sat in nightclubs of various sizes, and bought albums. I am so grateful to Epstein for providing throughout the book an abundance of comic material from scripts, films, published interviews, recordings, and other primary sources. He covers a period from 1890 until the present, organizing his material within four sections:
The Golden Door and the Velvet Curtain (1890-1930)
NOTE: Epstein creates a context frame-of-reference within which to begin to examine "the two great themes" as countless immigrants arrived in "the land of hope and tears." He then shifts his attention to The Age of Vaudeville.
The Years of Fear (1930-1950)
NOTE: This was a period during which there were many fears (e.g. poverty, world war, nuclear weapons, Communism) shared by most Americans. Epstein examines what he calls radio's "finest hour" as well as films which had their audiences "laughing in the dark." He then shifts his attention to the rise of the Borscht Belt.
The Years of Acceptance (1950-1965)
NOTE: Epstein examines the American Television Revolution and then the emergence of stand-up comedy, devoting special attention to Milton Berle, Sid Caesar, and Jack Benny as well as to Lenny Bruce, Myron Cohen, Jack E. Leonard, Buddy Hackett, Alan King, Jackie Mason, Shelley Berman, and Woody Allen.
The Years of Triumph (1965-Present)
NOTE: In this final section, Epstein traces the further development and refinement of "the two great themes" of American Jewish life (i.e. assimilation and the search for an American Jewish identity) and I enjoyed reading this section more than any of its three predecessors. In it, Epstein takes a close look at the films of Woody Allen and Mel Brooks (among several discussed) and then shifts his attention to Rodney Dangerfield, Don Rickles, Andy Kaufman, Howard Stern, various Jewish comediennes, Jerry Seinferld, and (in the final chapter) an emerging generation of young Jewish comedians.
In the Appendix, "Schlemiels and Nudnicks," Epstein shares his final thoughts which help the reader to re-establish an overall perspective on material which covers a period of more than 100 years. (It could reasonably be claimed that Epstein has examined certain themes and forces which have been active within Jewish culture for several thousand years.) He concludes that "the comics who emerged from this Jewish background were not aware of psychological or sociological theories. As George Burns noted, they were not hungry for recognition, "they were hungry for food. They did not question their humor but rather just recognized and used it. Nevertheless, the roles comedians played and most particularly the contributions of Eastern European Jewish culture shaped the personalities of these comedians and lay, either hidden or not, in their minds."
For me, a Gentile, it is impossible to determine to what extent Jewish comedy became assimilated within American society, and, to what extent Jewish comedy helped American society became assimilated with Jewish values. Let's all call it a tie and consider ourselves that much the better for it.

How to Be a Comedy Writer Review

How to Be a Comedy Writer

You can't tell from the picture but this book is literally tiny. 6" x 4.5" to be exact. But it bravely tries to cover every kind of comedy writing including character comedy, comedy plays, comedy drama, stand-up, sketches, radio comedy, TV comedy, screenplays, comedy novels, joke books. There's half a page on topical jokes etc etc. This does of course mean it's a bit vague about how to actually write and just tells you what to do if you have written something, but if you want a good romp through potential outlets for your comic writing it's worth a read.

Comedy at the Edge: How Stand-up in the 1970s Changed America Review

Comedy at the Edge: How Stand-up in the 1970s Changed America
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This book is a wonderful overview of the emergence of modern comedy and the role many of today's leading comics had in its emergence. The author does a wonderful job how pioneers such as Lenny Bruce paid an enormous price to make observational and topical humor of as much relevance as the one liners that were common place before hand. The book provides outstanding backgrounds on such comedy legends as George Carlin and Richard Pryor and what drove them.
The book also provides a background on lesser known comics who while legends in the comedy world did not carry over into the larger mainstream world. By this I am referring to the Richard Belzer's and Albert Brook's of the world whose commercial success was not as powerful as their influence. If there is one flaw in this novel it is the lack of information on these acts who may have been more influential then their commercial talents demonstrated. But all in all a book well worth your time and highly entertaining.

Lies that Chelsea Handler Told Me (A Chelsea Handler Book/Borderline Amazing Publishing) Review

Lies that Chelsea Handler Told Me (A Chelsea Handler Book/Borderline Amazing Publishing)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've read all of Chelsea's other books. Loved them. They are all laugh-out-loud books. Chelsea manages to get herself into some seriously bazaar situations, and her quick wit seems to always be her saving grace. If you've ever wondered how or why "all" that seems to pile down on this one woman, after reading this book, you'll wonder no more. She welcomes crazy in and then full on embraces it.
This book is written by the people who fill Handler's day, not Handler herself--which, of course-- you probably already know. The common theme in all the mini narratives is this: Chelsea lies, has huge boobs, pees her pants with alarming frequency, loves herself some late night chicken fingers, drinks too much and is overly generous. So, the moral is, although you're not getting Chelsea's voice from this book, you're getting the next best thing.
To be honest, not every essay is amazing (one even smacks seriously of Single White Female--now that is borderline scary) which is the reason I rated this book a 4 rather than a 5. It's worth the read, though. Seriously. If you're a fan of her comedy, her other publications or her show, you'll appreciate the raw way she infuses herself into the lives around her with a "take no prisoners" attitude. She spares no one, and inflicts the worst upon the ones she loves the most.
I wish I worked for her.

I have been laughing and joking my whole life, because if you don't laugh you just might cry. I think it is like that with most funny people. As it was a life-long dream of mine, I finally took the plunge and bought Sandi's book and enrolled in her class on how to be a stand-up comedian. That was eight weeks ago and I got more from Sandi's book than I did in TEN YEARS OF THERAPY!!! I lost 25 pounds! I gained new self confidence! I was able to find laughter in some things I NEVER would have considered funny (ever)! You know, my deepest and darkest pain. But it is all in how you look at it. Sandi is kind, gentle, spiritual and guiding. She is not a mean comic. She does not promote making fun of people at their expense, or being crass and rude. She taught me to strip away my "angry" layers and find the true joy and laughter that had been inside me all along, not the mean spirited laughter I had used to hide behind. Even if you aren't able to take her class, I say, BUY THE BOOK. It is incredibly thorough and the cheapest and most effective therapy you will EVER get. Not only that, you will end up a lot more funny than you could EVER imagine. I did my first stand up this past Sunday to a packed house and couldn't believe how many people were laughing (and hard). It made me feel good, like I made a difference in the lives of some people by sharing my experiences. I thought maybe they will heal a little, too. So, SPREAD THE LOVE AND SPREAD THE JOY! Buy this book and make a difference in your life and the lives of others. THANK YOU SANDI!!!

Made You Laugh: The Funniest Moments in Comedy

The sub-title says a lot. This is a collection of stories about comedy through the years. The list is too long to repeat here, but if it was funny: on stage, on radio, on television or in the movies, it's probably here.
It's written that you don't need to sit down and go from beginning to end. You flip through and you find Richard Pryor, or Bill Murray, or here's the story of the Smothers Brothers TV show getting cancelled because of political sensitivities, immediately to be followed by Laugh In.
To top it off, there's a CD, worth the price of the book by itself there's a DVD. On it, Carl and Rob Reiner present a compilation of clips from Charlie Chaplin to Jerry Lewis to Jim Carrey.
This is a very good, very entertaining book. This is not a funny book. It's a book about being funny. What it does is make you remember those movies, those shows that MADE YOU LAUGH.
