Frank, Sammy, Marlon & Me: Adventures in Paradise with the Celebrity Set Review

Frank, Sammy, Marlon and Me: Adventures in Paradise with the Celebrity Set
Average Reviews:

This is a collection of charming stories of Honolulu, most from the early days of statehood when the post war entertainment industry was exploding. Many of its biggest stars enjoyed R & R or low-pressure venues in Honolulu and became instrumental in promoting Hawaii as a vacation paradise. Through his newspaper work, Eddie Sherman met many of these celebrities. He shares his experiences with them in this book.
He revives the memory of Arthur Godfrey, who may have been the first one to spread Aloha though entertainment. Many of the younger celebrities he profiles are gone too, and so is the era. Now the press and celebrities seem to be adversaries or strange bedfellows... not friends. And good friends with celebrities, Sherman was. Brando takes a room in his building and visits his mother. Sherman visits Richard Boone for coffee. Henry Kaiser rescues his pet. Sherman drives around with Sammy Davis and mentors Bette Midler and Tommy Sands.
One interesting contrast is that of Elvis and Bob Hope. It's a little known fact that Elvis and "The Colonel" raised a giant share of the funds for the Arizona Memorial. At this time when some fundamentalist ministers are burning his records, Elvis is building an enduring monument for the nation. It's worth noting that his entertainment legacy has lasted considerably longer than Hope's.
Sherman shares some of his personal life and travel. His straightforward style conveys his love for Hawaii and the life of the island of Oahu.

Adventures in Paradise with the Celebrity Set What happened the day Frank Sinatra almost drowned in the Hawaiian surf? Why did Burgess Meredith stage a fake brawl in a Waikiki nightclub? Was Jack Lord really fired from Hawaii Five-0? Eddie Sherman knows — and tells all, in this fascinating peek behind Hawaiis celebrity scene. For more than 40 years, Sherman covered the showbiz beat in the finest three-dot tradition of Walter Winchell. (Yes, hes here too...) Hobnobbing with Elvis. Painting the town with Brando. Sparring with Muhammad Ali. Schmoozing with the stars, from Lenny Bruce to Bette Midler to Sammy Davis, Jr. The central figure in this wonderful supporting cast was Hawaii itself, the Pacific playground where big-name actors, singers and athletes came to escape the spotlight. Well-removed from Hollywood or Las Vegas, the stars could hit the beach and let their hair down, without the screaming crowds, autograph hunters or pesky paparazzi. Eddie Sherman was their welcoming committee and much more — interviewer, tour guide, confidant, friend. In Frank, Sammy, Marlon & Me, Hawaiis premier columnist and raconteur tells this inside story in his own words — of adventures in paradise with the celebrity set.

The book was very good except that is does miss out some Hostel's I stayed out that were just outstanding! One special one was only two blocks "Pacific Beach" in San Diego, corner of Cass and Garnet Streets called the "International House on the Second Floor". They especially cater for international tourist's and students, and are some of the best people I have ever met, it's also the cleanest Hostel around!. San Diego and Tijuana are very interesting and different but are both just beautiful. The book itself was quite detailed and everything was where it was suppose to be. One of the best in the Lonely Planet series!

A very good book and a big help on our recient trip, but I do want to update one section in particular. We went up the tram to Grouse Mountain and were lucky to have a clear winter night and the view was spectacular, the snow, lit for skiers was a fairyland, the city below, a carpet of sparkling light, however, I would like to state that the restaurant was far better than you suggest. It has been renovated and has a new chef and management. It was terrific in every way, service, decor and food. While somewhat up-scale, it is well worth the cost. We told them we would let you know of the changes.

Beyond compare. Aside, obviously, from his accomplishments in ammassing a wealth of information and trivia the chief outstanding feature of the book is the author's ability to convey his admiration and enthusiasm for the band while remaining somehow detatched and clear-sighted enough to criticise and poke fun of them. Volumes of this sort are typically so laden by melodramatic praise that the fawning writer makes his work unreadable. In short 'It Crawled From the South', is not only a break from the norm, but is also a spectacular piece when viewed out of context and in isolation.

The Complete Idiot's Guide to Walt Disney World Review

The Complete Idiot's Guide to Walt Disney World

I set out to plan a vacation to WDW in 2 months time and was not sure it was possible until I read this book. The easy to read format answered all my questions (even questions I did not know I should be asking). The card system in Appendix B allowed me to layout our entire trip - what we wanted to see or skip and where we wanted to eat. Going around the park was a breeze with the cards while keeping our little ones entertained with the attractions best suited for them. Plus, the book has great tips and tricks ("Hidden Magic"), and some money-saving ideas as well. I felt I had really learned the Disney lingo ("Mickey-Speak") before even arriving. Reading this book before you go will assure you make the very most of your money, time, energy and make one "magical" trip for your family.

Time Out New York (Time Out Guides) Review

Time Out New York (Time Out Guides)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The Time Out Guide to New York is, in my opinion, the best general guidebook you can buy to the city. It's updated annually, so the material is fresh, but best of all it brings the Time Out attitude and style to the guide book series. It's filled with full color photos (similar to the Knopf guides) and the listings contain not only the usual sights, stores and attractions, but also some of the more funky, out of the way places.
Plusses:
-Comprehensive coverage of most areas (see restaurant note below) -Lots of photos -Web site addresses for most listings -Content is also on their web site (www.timeout.com and www.timeoutny.com ) and updated regularly. -Not just the usual "everything is great" attitude that you get with Frommers or Fodors. -Contains ads for shows, hotels, restaurants (I like this as it gives more of a picture of the item. NOTE: There's big disclaimer in the front stating that even though they accept ads, their reviewers are independent)
-Small enough to fit in purse or (larger) back pocket. -Good cross referencing between sections
Minuses:
-Restaurant section not comprehensive. It's still very good, but selective. This may be due to the fact that they also publish a very comprehensive restaurant guide to NY. -Portions of the museum section are a bit skimpy. For example, the Knopf guides have 3 or 4 pages on the Metropolitan Museum, including floor plans and highlights of each collection, whereas this guide has about two column-inches of text on the Met. -No web site listings for restaurants.
As I said, this is the best guide to New York I've found (and I have them all). Highly recommended.

Mantan the Funnyman: The Life and Times of Mantan Moreland
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Being a Mantan Moreland fan for years, collecting his films and reading what little I could find out about his personal and professional life, I was blown away by this book. I respect what the reviewer before me says that it's probably not an ideal read for someone that never heard of Mantan, but for those of use who have researched the man, it fills in a lot of blanks.
In my search for Mantan Moreland all-black cast films, I met via email and telephone an older man who sold obscure films, and had worked at a New York movie theater as a teenager. There, he got to meet Mantan Moreland a few times when Mantan did promo appearances. He described Moreland as "... a very private individual. He was very reserved in person, unlike his screen persona." This reserve is what must frustrate an author, as it limits the number of interviewers who know the person, or well-known exploits of the person. This certainly has hampered Price in his research, although finding Mantan Moreland's daughter was a real coup.
Mr. Price has also explored Mantan's work as it affected him and others. While this could be viewed as somewhat self-indulgent, it also gives a unique context unlike the usual ploy of comparing a person with their times. Rather, it compares a person with the impact he has had on others.
If you are famiiar with Mantan Moreland, and want to know more about him, this is a great book to have.

Mantan Moreland would become Louisiana s richest gift to the funnyman traditions of Old Hollywood. He would happily wield his charm and charisma as second banana in a slew of films of the 1930s and40s. Moreland found his place in the spotlight, if not quite the sun, during the waxed-and-waning years of the Great God A mighty Depression as These United States lurched back toward prosperity via warfare. Thus situated, Moreland stood his ground for more than a decade before he found himself maneuvered toward a lower station in an upheaval of Cultural Correction.Mantan Moreland was one of Old Hollywood s most energetic comedians all due respect to the enshrined houses of Marx, Fields, Keaton and Chaplin. And Moreland s story, related in the most direct terms short of his own account, shows him to have been the most resilient, defiant and resurgent of that lot, as well. That is, within the limits imposed by the spirit of the times, a forgetful mass audience, and the disloyal marketplace itself.Hopefully Mantan the Funnyman will help Mantan Moreland find his well-deserved place in the sun.

Frommer's Ireland 2002 Review

Frommer's Ireland 2002
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
My family used Frommer's Ireland 12th Ed. extensively before, during ,and after our trip to Ireland in July of 2002. The first two chapters Best of..., and Planning your Trip... were worth the purchase price alone. All of the Best of tips we followed were excellent choices.
The large fold out map that was included served very well during our driving tour of Ireland. Using the county and town maps that were included in the local sections kept us right on track. Distances are deceptive however. It takes longer to get anywhere you go than it would appear from reading the map. The Irish road system is not built for speed ( nor comfort for that matter) so plan accordingly. It takes a long time to drive across the country, or from county to county. More could have been made of this issue in the guide. Our biggest mistake was trying to do too much.
The up to date information on Dublin was very helpful, as were the frequent tips throughout the guide on ways to avoid the summer crowds. I used the web addresses that were included for lodging and found them very helpful for checking availability and booking our rooms quickly. Don't go without it!

Funny Business: How to Make You Laugh on the Job Every Day Review

Funny Business: How to Make You Laugh on the Job Every Day
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Cherie Kerr teaches professionals how to "lighten up." But for those of us unable to attend a seminar, Funny Business, summarizes her approach to maintaining peace of mind by offsetting daily and unavoidable stress with good doses of healthy laughter. A more elegant phrasing is--in the author's words-- "For every down experience on the job, we need an up one to achieve balance."
And Kerr should know how to create these "up" experiences. She worked as professional comedian, actor, writer, and director. She teaches other actors and writers how to improvise, how to be extemporaneously funny. An entrepreneur, owner/founder of a west coast public relations firm, and a mother of three, Kerr even finds time to teach industrial, governmental, and academic leaders how to incorporate humor into their workplaces.
So when this board-level comedy consultant explains the nuts and bolts of applying humor as a motivational and communicative tool she does so in a narrative voice that is both easy to read, and hilarious. Several of the chapters have been tested on live audiences. Early in her quest for balance, Kerr sought answers from science. A "highly-renowned and noted professor of pathology, psychiatry, and psychology" describes humor as an activity that suppresses the "paraventricular nucleus (PVN) of the hypothalamus, and the locus coercleus." Winking at the reader, the narrator responds "Wow. It's that easy!" Then the vocabulary slips back into more comfortable zones with references to "happy hormones," the "humor muscle," and the "lockdown lever."
The delivery, quite often in the voice of a smooth stand up comic, keeps the reader alert and lubricates the transfer of a deadly serious message. A practiced sense of humor can regulate a person's vital signs, make concentration easier, and soothe stressful workplace relations. But senior managers, eager to coax or cajole subordinates toward exertions beyond last fiscal quarter's performance, should also take note. When employees are laughing, their stress levels come down. As stress levels abate, more nervous energy can be channeled into creative solutions including highly profitable innovations and improvements to long term productivity. To put this into economic jargon, by maximizing employee laughter opportunities, a firm's long term productivity gains would tend to boost shareholder value and give YOU (Ms Boss) better access to liberal year end bonuses.
So your hard working subordinates have planned, organized, and fretted over their next major sales presentation. Everyone knows their part, and everything that can be foreseen has its own contingency plan. Perhaps a quick trip to the bookstore--or a visit to the company supplies locker--would be in order. Make Funny Business a priority read. But before you distribute this delightful book to your officemates, you may want to read it yourself, preserving the punch lines for your own routines.

That's Not Funny Review

That's Not Funny

That's Not Funny!
In That's Not Funny!, Vince Sanders has written an enjoyable account about the intersection of social and political changes with the entertainment industry in the United States in the 1960's and 70's. While telling the story of Tim Reid and Tom Dreesen, Vince injects his own insights into a racially divided society and the part the entertainment industry played in the changes following the civil rights movement. Imbedded are also his observations and philosophies about success in the industry - observations from a man who progressed to the top of his own segment of the entertainment worl during the time that Tim and Tom were performing as the "nations's first black and white standup comedy team."
Terry Olson, Director
Orange County (Florida) Arts & Cultural Affairs That's Not Funny!
What adds the most credibility to That's Not Funny! is the real-life postscript. The portrait of Reid as ambitious has been borne out by his remarkable third act as an independent producer and director, helming a studio that makes African-American-themed films. Sander's rendering of Dreesen as a comic whose material was questionable, but whose work ethic was unparalleled also fits. He never became a superstar, but was so respected by peers that he thrived under the patronage of Davis, Sinatra Johnny Carson and David Letterman.

Long before WKRP in Cincinnati, Tim Reid and his partner, Tom Dreesen, were told they were funny enough to be in show business. They took that advice literally, and formed the nation's first black-and-white standup comedy act. Their marketing tools appeared naturally in place: A black youngster named Tim and the white one named Tom---even the names alliterated perfectly---leaving them the luxury of calling their act TIM & TOM. As their business manager, I had a ringside seat---watching them make the unpredictable trek from their hometown of Harvey, Illinois to Hollywood, California. Their young wives and children were affected as each 'Daddy' faced myriad challenges in this courageous and innovative foray into show business.

Frommer's England 2008 (Frommer's Complete) Review

Frommer's England 2008 (Frommer's Complete)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
It's probably too much to ask any one book to cover all of England in detail. But Frommer's has packed this 800-page monster with all the information they could in an attempt to do just that. Did they succeed? Mostly. For starters, they offer over 20 "Best of" lists that help you zero in on the finest the country has to offer in all sorts of categories ranging from museums to pubs and everything in between. Basic travel information is offered for those completely new to the country to help you start off on the right track. There's even a short offering to help you learn a bit about art and architecture so that you can better appreciate what you will see on your visit. And, of course, there are four suggested itineraries for complete trips. Finally, the remaining 700 pages detailed information on the various geographic areas of England.
Without diminishing the rest of the book, I found the "Best of" lists and the itineraries a great starting point because it helped me zoom in on the part of England that I would most want to visit. From there, I started worrying about the specifics of what I would do there and that's when the rest of the book started to come in handy. But I also purchased The Unofficial Guide to England (Unofficial Guides) and found that I often went back and forth between the two. For information on the Cotswolds, Lake District, and some other aspects of the trip, I found Frommer's to be the most helpful. At the same time, when it came to reviewing the sight-seeing attractions in London I preferred the content and format that the Unofficial Guide used. It's not that Frommer's didn't cover it at all, or that the coverage was poor. But comparing the two, I definitely found the Unofficial Guide easier to use for touring London. Leaving London aside, Frommer's has certainly put together the most comprehensive guide you will find on England. It has every city you could possibly be interested in as well covering the Lake District, the Cotswolds, and other rustic areas of interest to tourists.
In summary, I found the Frommer's Guide to be highly useful and I certainly recommend it to anyone planning a trip to England. I also believe that no one book will have everything when covering a place as diverse as England, so don't limit yourself to just one book.

These Frommmer guides are very good, and this one on Austin and San Antonio is no different. I am very familiar with these two cities and I find the suggestions in this guide to be on the whole very accurate. Though the hotel and restaurant sections are top loaded with the most famous and expensive, some smaller properties and resturants are not included. The sites section however is perfect, the guides descriptions and ratings are close to perfect. What I really appreciate about the Frommer guides is that you really feel like they have researched the subject, granted that should be a prerequisite in a travel guide, but unfortunitely in my experience that is not always the case.

The Beatles Way: Fab Wisdom for Everyday Life Review

The Beatles Way: Fab Wisdom for Everyday Life
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I'm a huge Beatles fan, and have read all the books on the market about the Fab Four. I thought I'd seen it all, so I didn't think I'd like this new "self-help" styled book.
Wow - was I wrong! Because I LOVED it! For the first time, I see the Beatles legacy actually helping me to live my own life in a more powerful, creative and joyful way.
The author knows his stuff, I learned several things I never knew about the Beatles. The author especially captures the spiritual essence of our dear-departed beloved George Harrison, and clearly shows his impact on the group and the world.
PLUS - "The Beatles Way" is never boring or preachy. It's a fun read, and Lange puts the "Yeah!" into the "Yeah Yeah Yeah!"
Get this book! I bought six copies for my friends and kids - it's the only self-help book I ever found useful! Kudos and thanks to the author for this breath of fresh air.

Thirty-one years after the Fab Four disbanded, Beatlemania continues in full swing. The group's latest CD, 1, is one of the fastest-selling records in history; their biography, Anthology, is a bestseller; and a new generation is falling under their spell. By analyzing the Beatles' extraordinary journey, Larry Lange has discerned specific principles that illustrate how to live more profound, richer, and happier lives. These principles include harnessing the power of dreaming, learning to set and meet goals, dealing with fear of the unknown, working as a team while remaining self-sufficient, keeping dreams fresh, and remaining open to spirituality and social responsibility. The book offers these principles of success and the exuberance of the Beatles as an alternative to traditional personal growth books.
