Blacklisted: The Film Lover's Guide To The Hollywood Blacklist is the collaboratively effort of Paul Buhle and Dave Wagner and an alphabetically arranged encyclopedia of entries concerning the films, directors, stars, writers, producers, designers, and others who suffered being blacklisted because of the House Un-American Activities Committee during their infamous Hollywood blacklist era. Over 2000 entries point the reader in the direction of grand works that were covered in shadow during a dangerous time in American history, including films such as "Roman Holiday" and "Bridge on the River Kwai". Blacklisted is a welcome and greatly appreciated contribution to Cinematic Studies reference collections.

Frommer's Irreverent Guide to Boston (Irreverent Guides)

This guide is all hype and not great hype at that. So it points out that there are bars and places to shop in Boston. Big whoop!!! This is nothing that any half baked hotel bell hop can't tell you nor is it the reason people visit here. This book doesn't tell you anything and you're much better off using one of the better tour guides that give real information on the tourist sites than on using this lame piece of work.

One that dares to be honest, hip, and fun? Look no more. Frommer's Irreverent Travel Guides are wickedly irreverent, unabashedly honest, and downright hilarious, and provide an insider's perspective on which attractions are overrated tourist traps and which are the secret gems that locals love. You'll get the lowdown on restaurants, lodging, and shopping, and even find out what the locals think of you. "Like being taken around by a savvy local," said the New York Times. "Hipper and savvier than other guides," concurred Diversion magazine. Never shy about confronting the issues, the Irreverents are guides to real travel in the real world.
The strait-laced Yankee sensibility is laid bare in Frommer's Irreverent Guide to Boston, a smart, savvy, no-holds-barred travel guide to New England's premier city. Learn the method behind the madness that is the Big Dig, how to fast-track the Freedom Trail, and how to find the bar Where Everybody Knows Your Name. Savor the city's best bowl of clam chowder and the bluebeery ale at the microbrewery near Fenway Park. Find out which nightclubs the eggheads at Harvard, MIT, and BU visit to lose brain cells. You'll get all this and much more entertaining, insightful travel advice and tips in Frommer's Irreverent Guide to Boston.

I bought this to take on my second trip to Minneapolis and St. Paul where my daughter just started college. It's a lovely area, but I don't think the author has been to the Twin Cities. We went to a few of the shops and places mentioned and they were nothing like as described, but huge disappointments. The author assumes you are going to shop only at the Mall of America, but we were looking for small, local places. You can find out where to go from the local magazines in your hotel room. Don't wast your money on this.

Sammy: The Autobiography of Sammy Davis, Jr. Review

Sammy: The Autobiography of Sammy Davis, Jr.
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
For beginners, this isn't bad. But those who are familiar with "Yes I can" and "Why Me?" (the Davis bios that this book was edited from) will not be happy. Too much of the good stuff from "Yes I Can" is missing, such as Sammy's guilt over his treatment of James Dean and his own mistreatment at the hands of other children and teenagers. Those were some of the most moving parts of that book and they should be included here. Oh well, you can always read the original.

Sammy Davis, Jr. (1925-90) rose from childhood stardom on the vaudeville stage to become one of the most famous African American entertainers of the 1950s and '60s (and the only black member of Frank Sinatra's Rat Pack). At the same time, he spent most of his career surrounded by controversy and ridicule--over his affairs with white film stars, his 1960 marriage to Swedish actress May Britt, his conversion to Judaism, his closeness to the Kennedys (and later Richard Nixon), and his problems with alcohol and drugs. When Davis published his first memoir, Yes, I Can, in 1965, it was a critical and popular success--acclaimed for a candor and thoughtfulness rare in celebrity autobiographies and for its painful evocation of life as a black peformer in segregated America.Davis's 1980 memoir, Why Me?, laid bare Davis's troubled relationship to the Kennedys, his ambivalence toward the Black Pride movement, the end of his marriage to Britt (and his complex open marriage with Altovise Davis), and his flamboyant, self-loathing misbehavior, from ruinous extravagance to flirtations with Satanism.Davis's co-writer Burt Boyar has revised Davis's memoirs, incorporating material from unpublished interviews, and has added a new introduction and epilogue. The result is a testament to an unacknowledged--often uncomfortable--leader in the struggle for racial equality.

When Sex Was Dirty Review

When Sex Was Dirty
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
As with the previous "Tales of Times Square," this book visits the glory that was Forty-Deuce back in the heyday of its vileness: the late 70s and early 80s. AIDS hadn't yet reared its head, Plato's Retreat and other sex clubs and bath-houses were still going strong, X-rated shops and theatres were all over the place, and prostitutes owned the streets.
Ah, the good old days.
Friedman approaches everything with an honest and open-eyed wonder-- he was at the center of things as a very youthful contributer to Al Goldstein's SCREW, and he meets some memorably loathesome people, as well as some endearing ones. His writing is mostly crisp and entertaining, but be warned: if you find sex icky, you might want to stick to the romance section of the bookstore. Sex here is a commodity, and porno is a business. Along the way we learn how Josh lost his virginity and his favorite starlets to whack off to-- it's that kind of a book.
Nice to know that the son of one of my favorite authors, Bruce Jay Friedman, is carrying on the tradition of mordant humor and jaundiced commentary on the less respectable side of things...

"Sardonic Ribald."-Penthouse

From the author of the revered Tales of Times Square, here's reporting from licentious New York City of the 1980s-a compelling assortment of pimp laureates, porn starlets, evangelical starlets, bizarre 42nd Street inhabitants, "the Strikeout King," and his stud-like counterpart, "God's Gift to Women."

This was a great book but it needs to be updated. This book is all about PLACE. Where you are going to hold your event. In my case I was planning a wedding. It was really good for finding interesting locations. (I had my wedding at the Brookfield Zoo.) We did not want a generic hotel. If you are trying to find a cool place to have an event this book is good. Don't buy it, check it out from the library. I hope they update it.

Confessions of a Lonely Soul Review

Confessions of a Lonely Soul
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Harold Turley's newest offering, Confessions Of A Lonely Soul starts at the funeral of DeMarco Reid. DeMarco left a videotape for all of his family and friends to watch at his funeral. On the videotape is the story of what led to the deaths of Lia, his wife, and himself. The story starts with DeMarco explaining the relationship problems between he and his wife. His wife (Lia) believes that he is spending more time at his job than he is spending with her. After his wife is stood up by DeMarco she chooses to do something that will change both of their lives forever. The choices that he and his wife make are only the start of their lives spiraling out of control.

Mr. Turley provides a fictional story with HIV, AIDS and depression awareness information for readers to apply to their own lives. This story had plenty of drama and memorable characters. There were times where I found myself going back to the previous chapters to figure out if I had missed something. The author at times would jump to another subject in the chapter without notice to the reader. I felt at times that the author may have rushed some of the subjects to get to the ending. With caution, I recommend this novel to readers looking for a quick read.

The Unofficial Guide to Walt Disney World 2005 Review

The Unofficial Guide to Walt Disney World 2005
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
For some families a trip to Walt Disney World is an annual ritual, for others it is a one-time rite of passage. For all who go, it is a big-ticket vacation destination with seemingly limitless choices of lodging, attractions, dining, and entertainment. This encyclopedic guide provides you with all the information you need to make the most of your time and money. Their recommendations are based on their own staff's experience as well as surveys of Disney vacationers and Unofficial Guide readers.
I wish I could give more than five stars to the vacation planning chapters of the book. Monthly attendance data plus subjective pros and cons of visiting during each season helped us decide when to go; detailed reviews of hotels within and outside the "World" helped us decide where to stay; an outline of all the available ticketing options helped us determine what sort of park admission to buy. All in all we saved hundreds of dollars - and planned a more suitable vacation for our family - as compared to following the advice of friends and co-workers.
The chapters pertaining to each park rate four to five stars. Each ride, show, or attraction is described in detail and given a star rating for each of several age groups. Careful attention is paid to factors affecting how long you will wait in line. The author provides touring plans designed to get you to as many of the "best" attractions as possible with the least amount of waiting in line; 1-day and 2-day touring plans for families with and without young children are provided for the Magic Kingdom. Occasionally the reviews are a bit idiosyncratic but on the whole they let you know what not to miss - and what to pass up with no regrets. The guide also includes chapters on Universal Orlando and Sea World.
The chapters reviewing Disney dining deserve four stars. Again, the coverage is vast and detailed, with reviews not only of restaurants in and out of the "World" but even of counter-service (i.e., fast food) within the "World." You will either shake your head and roll your eyes at the hints for landing a breakfast reservation at Cinderella's Royal Table, or you will rush to synchronize your clocks with Disney reservation center time and start warming up your dialing fingers. I agree with other reviewers that the restaurant reviews are overly harsh and discount the extent to which a sit-down meal in some Disney restaurants can be an attraction unto itself. There is also no index to table-service restaurants in each park.
This guide contains far more information than any one traveler is going to need, and at least some of it will seem like common sense - but one person's common sense is another's startling revelation. As with any guidebook some information will be out of date; some specific issues noted by prior reviewers have been corrected in the 2003 edition. If you are a true believer in Disney magic you might not like the blunt tone of the author's remarks. However, if you are a Disney skeptic, a novice, or simply a vacationer trying to get the most out of a big-deal vacation, the Unofficial Guide is an excellent resource.

Bronx to Broadway: A Life in Show Business Review

Bronx to Broadway: A Life in Show Business
Average Reviews:

Hal Thau's career, as with most high achievers, is a study of perseverance, determination and introspection. As he discusses the "pioneering spirit" in one chapter, the reader sees clearly through his examples and experiences that Thau does indeed have the pioneering spirit...and the ability to work with others (actors, entertainers, etc.) who also have it to help them "focus." I found his mix of sharing about the celebrities he managed and the personal glimpses of his own life and values excellent. I also appreciated Thau's poetic way of expressing things...his observations and introspection are thoughtfully and often poignantly expressed... It is so very interesting to read of this man's success in show business/management/producing and to also see he has kept his feet on the ground. His is an example of a life in which both worldly success and personal success are achieved and balanced. I highly recommend this book for all who share an entrepreneurial spirit--for all who seek to follow their dreams...it is an inspiring and insightful book.

Here's why I find this book invaluable: I am a New Yorker, yet I'm able to use it as a guidebook to my own city. It has all kinds of out of the way places such as East Village eatery Veselka that would not appear in the typical tourists guide. And it is written in a way that's both edgy and accessible. I can only imagine that this book would be a great resource for non-New Yorkers.

Celebrating its fifth edition and its fifteenth anniversary, the completely updated Native's Guide to New York is still the quintessential insider's guide, "filled with the outrageous to the obvious: a must read for any New Yorker claiming to be a New Yorker" (New York Daily News). Richard Laermer "clues you in to all manner of diversions even born-and-bred locals may not know" (Los Angeles Times): where to find the best party at 5 a.m. and where to find the best bagels afterward; where to go on a date in the daytime (and where to find a date while volunteering); the best gardens and the most famous crime sites; the best places to eat alone or to play pool; and those unspoken places to avoid. Informative sidebars and indexes by both name and neighborhood help you find places easily. Laermer has an eye for what's hip and what's here to stay.

Acts of Intervention: Performance, Gay Culture, and AIDS (Unnatural Acts: Theorizing the Performative) Review

Acts of Intervention: Performance, Gay Culture, and AIDS (Unnatural Acts: Theorizing the Performative)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This book is a valuable source for the variety of performances that have accompanied the appearance of AIDS in the United States. Roman carefully evaluates how theatre and performative events, from the activism of ACT-UP to Magic Johnson's announcement of his HIV status, have shaped the way that AIDS has been portrayed. In his introduction, Roman outlines his positionality within his subject, remaining critically responsible while acknowledging the impossibility of "objectivity." An important aspect of his critical approach is his "generosity" towards the performances he analyzes. He states that his purpose in the book is not to evaluate the performances for their artistic merit, but to show their position within the overall field of AIDS performance. He shows how performances that may have been "bad" nonetheless had an impact on their audience. Roman never succumbs to romanticism or nostalgia, but approaches his subject with reverence and respect. Roman's book leaves room for others to continue within the subject of AIDS performance and will continue to be a valuable source for those working in the field.

Lesbian Film Guide (Sexual Politics)

I have bought several other books about lesbians or lesbians/gays in film. They were interesting and films were talked about but it was hard to find specific films or lists of films. This book lists lesbian films and films with lesbian characters or subtext in alphabetical order. The author lists the title, year, director, actors and synopsis of each film. There are also lists of actors, directors and film titles at the end of the book. It includes films from several different countries from the 1930's until the book was published in 2000. Black and white photos are also included. Great cover photo of Jennifer Tilly in "Bound." Best lesbian film reference guide I've found so far.

I was not familiar with this British travelguide series until I used this edition for my recent trip to New Zealand. The book is very easy to use, with pleasing layouts, and up-to-date and reliable restaurant recommendations of sites to see, hotels, restaurants, etc. The writer really showed his familiarity with NZ, and the writing was crisp and energetic. I had researched several guides to NZ (Fodors, Frommers, Lonely Planet, Rough Guide) before I left and found this one to be the best. I also looked into the Footprints guide to Australia and found it to be equally first-rate. I will definitely consider a Footprints guide again the next time I travel.

Frommer's Washington, D.C. 2006 (Frommer's Complete) Review

Frommer's Washington, D.C. 2006 (Frommer's Complete)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I rated the 2004 edition of this book at 5 stars, but this edition has slipped just a bit for containing outdated information and omissions of a few other things, so I would say it deserves a 4-and-a-half star rating.
The major thing missing is a mention of The Circulator. This is the bus that loops from Capitol Hill through the K-street corridor to Georgetown, and is $1 to ride, and runs until 10pm. It is cheaper and runs much more frequently than the blue bus that is mentioned in the guide. The Circulator started in early 2005, so it should have made it into this year's edition of the Frommers.
The guide lists a Smithsonian Museum Hotline, and when I called this month (August 2006), the number was out of service.
The Phillips Collection is listed as being free during the weekdays. Wrong. The Phillips Collection is donation-only during the weekdays, and the gal at the desk did watch us drop some money in the donation box. Not a huge deal, but the information was inaccurate. The Phillips has doubled in size since the renovations were completed, and "The Boating Party" is once again on display after its long absence in a traveling exhibition, as is my favorite, "Woman With Dog" painted by Pierre Bonnard.
In the 2004 edition, there was a restaurant that my wife and I loved named Olives. It was not in this edition, but it is still in business and was a fabulous experience when we went (as it was 2 years ago). We enjoyed Olives vastly better than La Tosca (don't order the chicken at La Tosca...blah).
Another place that should be mentioned in the guide is The Capitol City Brewing Company right near China Town (with another location on Capitol Hill). The variety of micro-brews was fantastic, the staff was very friendly (especially Benny!), and during weekdays from 4pm until 7pm, they have half-price beers and appetizers at the enormous bar section (the sesame-covered seared tuna and the Asian quesadillas were absolutely delightful). A great place to visit if you are on a budget.
Even with these minor errors and omissions, it is still a highly valuable guide.
